This sensational genre defined the tail end of the 20th century, playing out the fantasies of mainstream USA to a global market. A maligned genre, it can surprise in its complexity, beauty and subversion. Aesthetically cool as fuck with some all time fave music. Alongside classics like 80s De Palma, Joe Eszterhas 90s vehicles for Sharon Stone and a touch of Linda Fiorentino (who is stunning in John Dahl’s superb The Last Seduction) expect cross genre moods and plenty of sleazier Direct To Video films (Gregory Dark’s empire). This genre borrowed from itself, the DTV soft core porn and blockbuster / art house end of the spectrum sharing tropes within its own eco system which during its 90s peak was a cultural phenomenon. Some DTV moments being visually as stunning as say, 90s Abel Ferrara or Donald Cammell’s Wild Side. A forever fascinating and understudied genre. I highly recommend The Erotic Thriller in Contemporary Cinema by Linda Ruth Williams for anyone interested in diving further, the first full length study of the genre.
