CAPTAIN HOLLYWOOD PROJECT - Only With You (House Mix 2)

Scuba Death is Ricardo Donoso's alter ego. With more of a focus on analog sound, percussion, sampling, and location recordings, there is an organic undercurrent on Scuba Death recordings that isn't as prevalent in his solo work. This music is rich in atmosphere while still tethered to the deeper ideas that Donoso often explores in his work. Treatises on fear and death­anxiety, the underlining thematic framework for the project, run rampant throughout these claustrophobic electronic passages, and teeter on the edge of being oppressive. 

Nitrogen Narcosis marks the first full length and strongest statement in the Scuba Death repertoire after the privately issued, ruthless ‘Demon Seed’ twelve inch back in 2011. The album alternates between surprising lethargic dance inflections all nestled between 75 & 100 bpm, the normal resting heart rate for adults, and the more conceptual, numbness­inducing pieces like "50­-70 Meters" and "Nociception." Sequencing plays an integral role on Nitrogen Narcosis as the listener is suddenly thrust into the darkest reaches of the ocean after dark alley grooves are sucked into an aquatic abyss. 

For a project named after Donoso's near­drowning experience in the South Atlantic when he was younger, there's an impressive amount of reflection & vulnerability present – the field recordings that permeate throughout the album were captured at the same location the undertow caught hold of him that bright Summer day 20 years prior. An inner battle between paranoia and euphoria is played out in well­conceived, precision sonics on Nitrogen Narcosis as Donoso reminds us to look back, break through the surface and go deeper. 

Ricardo Donoso's solo work speaks for itself, but with this new chapter comes new questions and considerations. Scuba Death is enigmatic to a fault and all the better for it.

Denovali Records is pleased to welcome RICARDO DONOSO to the roster. In anticipation of the release of his new album Saravá Exu in January 2015, to be released along with Deterrence, previously available only on casette and now completely remastered, we offer the EP Beginning of the Shape as a free digital release. A further new album, Machine 2 Machine, will appear in April 2015, and a collector's vinyl boxset release, containing the previous albums Progress Chance, Assimilating The Shadow and As Iron Sharpens Iron, One Verse Sharpens Another will follow in May 2015.

Carrying on from his highly acclaimed trilogy on the Digitalis label, “Beginning of the Shape” marks his first release for Denovali. The new EP hints at a new direction for the composer, while more experimental textures are at the forefront his sense of pacing and musical development remains intact – a perfect taste for what’s to come in the months ahead.

Ricardo Donoso is a composer, percussionist and electronic musician from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil who currently resides in Boston.  After having studied composition at Berklee College of Music and New England Conservatory he has participated in a slew of projects over the years, most notably playing drums for avant-death metal unit Ehnahre and being one half of the ever morphing electronic duo Perispirit. Ricardo's musical vocabulary draws as much from contemporary composition, drone, to techno and noise. Whether on his multifaceted albums or in live performance Donoso’s main interest lies in building and manipulating an immersive sound world that bridges the gap between light and dark, hope & despair and the past & future – creating a truly timeless & transcendent experience.

He has released music on esteemed labels such as Digitalis, Further Records and Hospital Productions and has toured throughout North America, Europe & Asia. His first three albums – Progress Chance (2011), Assimilating The Shadow (2012) and As Iron Sharpens Iron, One Verse Sharpens Another (2013) – were widely celebrated by specialized vehicles such as FACT, Clash and Resident Advisor. Pitchfork Media called it: “dream-state dance music,” while Exclaim (CA) called it “one of the most compelling and satisfying electronic albums of the year” which culminated with performances at the illustrious Sonar Festival in both its Barcelona & Sao Paulo editions in 2012. His music has been described as a sort of ‘anti-techno’ where polyrhythmic structures and meticulous textures blur any semblance of a bar line, instead collapsing in on itself for moments of striking isolation.

Ricardo Donoso has led listeners on an incredible journey through the sun kissed, post-rave morning in Rio through to the blackened shadows of the psyche, to the submerged alien depths of the Scuba Death project. Next time all limits will be destroyed.

Sun Hammer and I had the great fortune of collaborating on this Junto project together while he was traveling through Colorado this last weekend.

We chose to use two of the provided field recordings, supplementing them with sounds from Sun Hammer's own collection for the winter and spring sections. From there, we created three distinct layers for the arrangement. The most readily identifiable segment consists of the unprocessed field recordings, mixed and blended so as to show progression from winter to fall.

Beneath that, we created two additional layers, each of which showcases our respective approach to sound design and signal processing. Sun Hammer provided several layers of the source recordings processed through his Max / Ableton set-up, while I passed each of the samples through a selection of guitar pedals.

We arranged and mixed the final track together.

Chen Yi aims for a collective approach of art. As an isolated group of humans/numbers operating directly from a secret place in Chelmsford (UK), they developped a personnal and "bizarre" utilisation of guitars, machines, voices, distortion, giving as result an unconventional regroupment of compositions amongst a lot of lost/unreleased recordings. This is likely what got John Peel interested which leads to an inexplicable CBS contract. More couldn't be finalised, because CBS suddenly pulled out of the contract. "Due to their raw and alternative 'self-made' musical approach, they've been compared to the likes of Throbbing Gristle, Borghesia & Severed Heads or more underground names as Het Zweet, Biting Tongues..."

'Dutch Tvashar Plumes' seems to map the changes in Lee's approach to music making over the last 4/5 years. From his initial exposure and subsequent immersion into Jungle as a teenager, he soon began experimenting with structure and sound design which led him to a more 'academic' approach with 'Computer Music'. There were many self-imposed rules he adhered to during this time. These last few years he decided to break with that and make an intuitive venture forward. This record is the first real document of that.
