as funky and twisted as this sort of music (idm, electronica, whatever the fuck you want to call it) will be allowed to get. both are winners. 'interstella' takes metallic, twisting drums and nails them to a groove against which all sorts of mayhem can bounce off. 'funkynightmare' is just that. a cut up stuttering vocal tries to make itself heard against eerie chords, plink-plonky sounds and 8-bit melodies. champion.

Subjex construct the crunch with an array of metallic objects and broken instruments designed to rumble – just like we like it. The title track on side A is one of those delicious “play loud” numbers that sits itself somewhere snugly alongside Crunch, Eog and the Rip Off Artist with its bouncy cut-up aesthetic and DSP’d reliance on the funked-up glitch. Tough. “Funkynightmare” on the flip lets its hair down with a freeform deployment of Maxed-out beat sorties and malladjusted SFX – once again delivering the sort of tough-end IDM that manages to make itself noticable by being more than just placidly “Nice”. Wicked!

I was jaming with the korg volcas, some tiny little analog boxes. Just did some resampling and used Compression and conv. reverb.

The present tracks were produced circa 2000-2001 and are my first releases as "Subjex". This EP was "hidden" inside a compilation i curated for a small local label (Tot-Al Records, released in 2002) and that i called "Bedroom Research" because, at the time, my friends and i were living in tiny rooms, with a mattress thrown on the floor and a computer, exploring sound 24/7. I decided to keep this fancy name and make it the one of a collective and a label... A starting point.

The Fifth track of the debut album "SPACE-1" by The Phoenix Vertigo. To be released. Imagine yourself cruising around in a buggy on the surface.

SPACE-1 is a synthetic audio representation of each of the planets within our solar system, along with our Sun. Each song was created with strict use of analog and FM synthesis (no VST instruments). Drum samples were created using the same equipment (MFOS Soundlab Ultimate, DIY custom 3 Osc analog synth, TX81z, Prophet 08, SH-101). The end result should be reminiscent of your 3rd grade field trip to the planetarium, granted you are between the ages of 25-40.
