"I've been in love with Destructo's 'Techno' since the first time I heard it - I think midtempo electro and deeper indie dance are taking off, and I wanted to give the original my own rework. I liked how Destructo grabbed the sample from Eminem's 'Without Me', and decided to use more of that sample to build the song around. I kept the tempo at 112BPM, but decided to get more complex and weird with my bass arrangement - I hope my Fresch Fam love this remix as much as I do!"

The closure of fabric has seen a reaction that has been completely humbling and overwhelming to all of us on the team here, from over 150,000 signing a petition of support to raising in excess of £300,000 in donations to help our legal fight.

Support has come from every corner of the industry, with fundraising events at a number of different venues being held up and down the UK. This response perfectly encapsulates everything the electronic music community represents.

Both fabric Records and our artist led label Houndstooth decided a release that embodies this spirit would be a further powerful way to demonstrate the collective power of our community. We asked artists associated with both labels to donate a track to the cause, needing to act fast we gave a deadline of just 3 weeks in total, from inception to final master. The brief was simple, we asked for a previously unreleased track, either brand new or an alternative version of an old classic.

The response has been far greater than we could have ever anticipated, with an array of amazing artists delivering stunning tracks. Given this generosity every track that has been submitted is featured on the release, meaning an incredible 111 tracks make up the final running order, presented in alphabetical order.

Due to touring and time constraints many more artists could and would have like to have been involved, and we can’t give enough thanks to all the labels that have generously allowed their artists to contribute.

In the era of the playlist, this compilation represents a comprehensive overview of electronic music from the outer fringes of experimental explorations right through to music aimed squarely at the dancefloor.

Ahead of the court date which will determine the long term future of fabric nightclub we’d like to present this compilation as a document of this moment in time but also as the perfect embodiment of everything fabric is and stands for.

The contrast in each track within the Small Ships EP shows a varied taste and an eclectic palate for any electronic music connoisseur, from the deeper barrels of house to the higher haze of club room techno. All the while, Trulyors has put in the work that's laid the foundations for a notable debut on CFA, and now we can't wait for you to get banging it out across speakers, sound systems and headphones; we're certainly going to be bringing the sound across the borders. 

The Small Ships EP sees the light of day, and the dark of clubs on the 7th November.

Next up! Second chapter in the AF Voiceless series. The label run by Pervert keeps on broadening its own catalogue by adding artists committed to the electronic cause. This EP is a 5-track new voyage through analogue-crafted soundscapes, acid-injected breaks, thudding bass lines, warm and intricate melodies… the sheerest voice for the voiceless. AF005Y introduces new members to the family as Houston-based Daed (Ian Lambert), who displays his ability to create a perfect acid-glitched blast called ‘Pulse Lunar’. Thus, ‘Smiley moon’ is above all a glimpse into the analogue world of the well-known Rolando Simmons, proving himself he's one of the brightest electronic artists of the moment. Sheffield based Dave Forrester (TechDiff) twists the modular in ‘Jamuary’ with a killer Aphexian/Jenkinson temper. Longing raving days are depicted in ‘Quest’ with an evocative electro halo by the hand of the Irish producer Cignol. Last but not least, ’Smoke’, a junglist, acid, and braindance orgy signed by Gareth Clarke, known for his previous works on Canada’s Sublight Records (Venetian Snares, Bill Laswell) and LoveLove Records.

In 2007, a limited one-sided 12” of ‘XXXO’ by Equip was pressed. Previously unreleased, this 1983 recording was an uncanny harbinger of the Acid House era, which was still a number of years in the future.  

This was the accompanying press release:

In 1984 Street Sounds released the experimental ‘UK Electro’ album as part of their now legendary Electro series. All but one of the tracks on this ‘compilation’ were written and produced by the same nucleus of people, although the labels owner, Morgan Khan, came up with an array of fictitious names for the album credits, giving the impression of a thriving British Electro movement.

The trio behind the lion’s share of ‘UK Electro’ were Greg Wilson, a pioneering DJ who’d championed Electro via his cutting-edge nights at venues including Wigan Pier and Manchester clubs, Legend and The Hacienda, Martin Jackson, formerly a drummer with the band Magazine, and Andy Connell, the keyboard player with A Certain Ratio (Connell and Jackson would later go on to chart success, having formed Swing Out Sister).

‘UK Electro’ would reach the highly creditable position of number 60 on the album chart and is nowadays regarded as a cult-classic, having been an inspiration for the oncoming generation of homegrown dance producers, who’d make such an impact later in the decade. Much was made at the time about a British DJ being involved in making, rather than playing records, although this would become the norm a few years down the line.

One track from the sessions the ‘UK Electro’ collaborators worked on that never made the LP was ‘XXXO’ by Equip, which Morgan Khan didn’t deem strong enough for inclusion, perhaps due to its straighter 4/4 beat. It was recorded as a demo at Manchester’s Drone Studio in December 1983, along with another track that did appear on the album, ‘Real Time (Retrospective Dub)’ by Zer-o.

Issued for the first time, as a limited edition 12”,‘XXXO’ is a slice of British dance history, which has been described, in hindsight, as ‘Proto Acid House’. By complete accident, Wilson, Jackson and Connell had anticipated the direction that dance music was destined to take, but the track would never see the light of day, with only record company and DJ contacts, along with friends and family, getting to hear the demo back then.

When, in the early 90’s, Greg Wilson featured it on a promo cassette compilation of his work, a number of people expressed surprise that it actually pre-dated the early Chicago House releases, having assumed that this was the source of the tracks inspiration. More recently, Wilson included it on a CD he put together, originally for members of the Electro Empire website, which included an alternative version of ‘UK Electro’. It’s from these CD’s that the interest in ‘XXXO’ has built, resulting in the decision to finally make it available all these years on.
