As the updated old saying might go, life is like a Lydo set - you never know what you're gunna get. This New York City-based interdisciplinary artist has plenty of tricks up their sleeve and a real love of mixing up genres in ways you wouldn't think possible. They have done so across Europe and North America and have a hardcore following at home where they run the legendary X-TRA.SERVICES. It makes regular seasonal appearances at BASEMENT, where LYDO (@lydole) is also a resident, and is a safe place to party for queer, trans, and non-binary people of colour.

LYDO's selections for us this week blow open the usual boundaries of techno. It's a mix of contrasts, where barrages of noise and malfunctioning machines are lit up by the most gorgeous melodies. Thumping and heavy rhythms are offset by wispy and light-emitting synth leads as energy levels are masterfully controlled. They build to moments of real intensity before being boiled down to pent-up promise and heads-down grooves. Somehow these sounds are both retro yet future, animalistic yet human, and they are proof that LYDO is a standout contemporary talent.

Ariel Zetina is as charming as she is talented—one of the many reasons she was named "Chicagoan of the Year for Pop Music" by the Chicago Tribune last month. A straight shooter with strong principles, her witty personality shines through on social media and in person. She radiates both best friend and boss energy.

Musically, she wears her heart on her sleeve, infusing her personality into her DJing and production. Her sets and mixes are adventurous, moving from hard to soft to playful with precision. From producing theatre shows and opening for Beyoncé to releasing her RA-recommended debut album on Local Action in 2022, the smartbar resident approaches each venture with meaning and depth. That LP explored the complex experience of being a Belizean-American trans woman, using fiery house and techno to express vulnerability and triumph. 

Ariel Zetina's multifaceted personality is on full display in her RA podcast. There's baile funk-infused techno, crisp drum & bass and plenty of tracks from queer producers from all sorts of scenes, including Michael Cignarale, StrikeStone! and Perfect Lovers. It's a grand statement of power, flow and seriously good taste.

DJ, producer and antidisciplinary artist MORENXXX, also known as Jesús Hilario Reyes is a true enigmatic force exalted from Chicago’s underground (now currently based in Brooklyn). Hilario-Reyes has garnered well-deserved attention after raving contributions to Honcho Campout, 4th World, Dweller, HÖR and many more. The dance floor and its participants is a centralized element within their practice; contextualized as a ‘devotional, site of becoming and unbecoming'. They've developed a feedback loop that sees queer underground nightlife as both the momentum and drive for much of their work both in and out of the confines of the dancefloor. MORENXXX's hypnotic yet blisteringly fast sound ranges with rapturous percussion and ethereal intensity: weaving dynamic rhythms across trance, techno, house and playful vocalization that culminates into something entirely its own. Taking inspiration from mid-late 90s, and early 00s dance music MORENXXX blends the contemporary and the timeless with cyclonic fluidity, feeling both of the times and a product of what once was, as an ode to a queer temporality.
