I am pleased to welcome you all the first edition of my new mix series "Conference Calls." 

Conference Calls. will be an ongoing occurrence throughout the year, typically about 40-45 minutes in length, and may or may not have a theme to each collection.

This first edition does not have an initial theme but is here to begin the process and establish the series... a Mission Statement one might say. lol

This first edition though does in fact feature new material mostly from the upcoming 2 disc album, as well as a couple goodies that I know people have enjoyed me playing out at shows this past year and will probably appreciate being able to listen at their leisure.

While on Jam Cruise 13 (2015), Derek Vincent Smith AKA Pretty Lights uploaded 10 tracks straight from his laptop to PLF member Cassie Blochinger's flash drive. Some are debatably finished, some are breaks from which he would sculpt a finished track, and some are right in the middle. The tracks themselves are not necessarily all new, but still have not seen an official release.

Derek on “Flips”…

“We ended up devising something we call ‘flips.” We’ll start with a produced song, and everyone has a philosophy for playing on top of the produced songs. Alvin has acoustic drums that he’ll play on top of it, and we also have drum triggers for electronic drum sounds so we can get a produced sound from the live kit. When I call a ‘flip’ everyone knows that I’m about to filter out the produced track. When the produced music disappears, the live musicians completely switch their sound to something that’s more electronic. Borahm will drop into a synth bass, Alvin will switch to an electronic kick and an electronic snare. It’s like a quick crossfade. It allows us to go from the produced track, with the band accentuating it, to a fully live band without losing something…It’s completely improvised but we’ve put a lot of time into making sure they know, stylistically, where the bounds are.”

To celebrate the new season of the Episodic Festival series, premiering next week on August 4th and 5th at The Gorge Amphitheater in George, WA, Pretty Lights has released a collection of rare, and unreleased tunes into the hands of fans in the form of USB 2.0. As the “Pretty Lights Movement” project continues to evolve, the idea of getting old and rare tunes to the fans as a way to progressively collaborate, bring the entire community together, share art in a different format, and move these rare pieces of sound forward to the social media platform also continues to evolve.

The Pretty Lights team has big things in store for this years Episodic Festival Series and the rest of 2017, along with the growing #PLMovement project… The expansion of this idea, the ongoing collaboration within the PLF community, and the sharing of art from all the different artists involved in new progressive ways, are things to look forward to from the PL team and the family in the near future… Stay Tuned!
