For over 10 years, Eric Nelson Efa and members of his association, the Azania Way Culture, have crisscrossed almost half of Cameroon's 10 regions: the deep North, around Lake Chad, the central region, the Adamawa and the south, to record traditional musicians who are getting very old and are the last repository of traditional music in Cameroon.  In this episode of Afropop Worldwide, Georges Collinet takes us to Eric's village in the deep forest of southern Cameroon to listen to his story. We also meet young musicians influenced by the art of their ancestors - including an opera singer!

“Heart of Light” – the last words uttered publicly by democratically elected first president of newly independent Congo Patrice Lumumba at his inauguration address, 3 months before his murder by Belgium and CIA, because he dared to oppose the western economic powers and planned to keep the wealth of the Congo for the Congo.  Freedom and hope was killed in 1961, with disastrous consequences that last until today, but The Heart of Light can never die…

Rumba traveled back to Africa via Cuba and Haiti in the 40s and 50s, later developing into Soukous, arguably peaking in the 60s and 70s, and lived on well into the 90s with a more streamlined and modern sound. This mix is only a tiny slice of this glorious sound from the later periods: 4 on the floor, with enough bass for modern dance floors.  Excluded are examples from the ocean of older, incredibly varied recordings, of supreme beauty and artistic merit but many of which sadly have poor sound quality, as the best musicians in the world were, and are, often recording under the worst conditions and with the worst equipment.

Despite being the biggest African music export in history, African Rumba, just like all African music, is criminally under exposed in the Northern Hemisphere.  Yet this music should be crucial, of a central importance, to anyone interested in dance music, in Pop, in Rock, in Soul,  in Jazz, in Funk, etc.  Objectively speaking, in terms of raw musicianship, in terms of composition and arrangement, and if we break the rhythms and melodies down to mathematical patterns and study them, the highly evolved structures of this music are perfectly designed and executed in every way.

I grew up with Industrial Noise, Punk, and Metal, and it wasn’t until my late 20s/early 30s until i was emotionally mature enough to appreciate amazing sounds like this. Please leave your cynicism at the door and embrace this music, for the truth is, something Africans have known all along, that ultimately the most powerful revolutionary force, of which the powers are afraid, is not anger — it is love.

2020 has been a year like no other. Tours and concerts have been cancelled, and future plans remain up in the air. Just the same, a great deal of fantastic music has emerged from Africa and the diaspora. In their annual tradition, Georges Collinet and Banning Eyre take stock of the year’s offerings, covering an ever-growing array of styles and artistic movements. On appelle ça du fétichisme racial, et les personnes concernées par la question viennent nous raconter leurs expériences, les conséquences sur leur vie et livrent une analyse sans concession ni filtre sur un phénomène aussi vieux que les premières expéditions coloniales.

modrums (Morgan Greenstreet) is a drummer, DJ, journalist and radio producer based in New York City. He’s a resident DJ of Zona Libre with dj tres dos. modrums approaches his DJ sets with an ear to the sonic footprint of the African diaspora, drawing on an impressive collection built from his years as a radio producer and a musician and shaped by his frequent travels through Europe, West Africa and the Caribbean. He plays with a sense of tension and release, emotion and humor, merging roots, retro pop and current aesthetics into a singular experience of communal joy.
