Darnell Walker is Esalen's artist in residence for Spring 2021. Darnell is a writer and creator of children’s media, as well as a powerful documentary filmmaker - his efforts include 2015’s Seeking Asylum, which explored Black Americans’ desires to escape American tyranny and widespread police violence for safer lands, Outside the House, which focuses on Black mental health, and Set Yourself on Fire, a film about sexual violence, . His work investigates education and revolution, with a strong first-person point of view informed by an inspiring DIY ethic. Together we explored his body of work, modes of creativity, and the kind of change he hopes to affect in the world.

Suzanne Simard is a Professor of Forest Ecology at the University of British Columbia as well as the author of the excellent new memoir, “Finding the Mother Tree: Discovering the Wisdom of the Forest.” 

Suzanne is a pioneer on the frontier of plant communication and intelligence; she’s been hailed as a scientist who conveys complex, technical ideas in a way that is dazzling and profound. Her TED talks have been viewed by more than 10 million people worldwide. Together, we discussed her scientific findings, the dangers of deforestation, how her literary and scientific proclivities intertwine, and what it’s like to have a character in a pulitzer prize winning novel based on her (Richard Powers' "The Overstory"). She's a rather amazing person, passionate about the future of the planet and our shared existence with old-growth forests.

A growing number of people are aware of the Enneagram as an accurate and profound map of personality. Greetings folks...it has been actual years since I've uploaded anything here, so here we go!  Got super inspired by some liquid / neuro drum and bass styles and gave it a go with my own spin on it.  I'll give it a for real proper mixdown and set it free for release at some point, but for now I hope you'll enjoy.  This is the first solo track I've done in quite a while after being devoted primarily to our Birds of Paradise releases, thanks for your stellar love, support and patience over the years, it is truly appreciated.

It's Reich That, Cos Dub's The Way It Is

This Archive Edition of Voices of Esalen features a talk by the inimitable Terence McKenna, delivered at Esalen in August 1992. For those not familiar with his work, McKenna was the ultimate psychedelic intellectual: an acclaimed ethnobotanist, mystic, and hyper-articulate lecturer, he spoke and wrote fluently about a variety of subjects, including entheogens, shamanism, metaphysics, alchemy, semiotics, technology, futurism, environmentalism, and human consciousness, to name only a few. His rambling brand of wisdom is admittedly sometimes challenging to decrypt, yet his admirers find that a McKenna lecture is always worth the time, and that the wisdom of the words, even those which defy rational understanding, can be absorbed almost osmotically. 

Some of McKenna's notable books include The Invisible Landscape, True Hallucinations, and the Archaic Revival; his brother Dennis McKenna penned a notable memoir of their life together, entitled The Brotherhood of The Screaming Abyss. McKenna enjoyed a long and extraordinarily close association with Esalen and with Big Sur; before his death on April 3rd, 2000, he had been scholar in residence many times and delivered scores of talks which are housed in the Esalen archives. “Politics and Ethos” covers a lot of ground (typical for McKenna), including psychedelic ontologies, modernity, language, reason, religion, freedom, nostalgia and more. About DJ Deckard:
Born and bred in Washington, Keith Harris (a.k.a. Deckard) starting DJ-ing in 2000, at venues and clubs in Seattle and Canada. He moved to San Francisco in 2005 where his skills and talent evolved and became even more prolific, garnering interest and accolade and earning him a spot in the underground music scene.

Deckard made his big splash as a member of Coda in 2006 at Burning Man. Soon after he joined forces with the Space Cowboys whose parties are legendary in San Francisco and Burning Man and whose Ripecast podcast was nominated for Best Podcast of the Year by Breakspoll for 2013.

Mixing together a blend of music selection including, but certainly not limited to breakbeat, nu funk, and house, Deckard keeps crowds on their feet and moving backed by his unique sound and ability to mix genres whether it be playing a sunrise set at Breakfast of Champions or closing down the main room in front of a packed warehouse.

Deckard has performed in a variety of venues on the west coast and Canada with DJs such as Jondi & Spesh, Uberzone, Lee Coombs, Plump DJs, Dylan Rhymes, Meat Katie, Elite Force/Simon Shackleton, Worthy and more.
