What does ´afterhours´ mean to you?

Growing up with this beloved music, for me the term afterhours was primarily connoted with two perceptions: ambient sounds and definitely times when “normal” people sleep.

In the early 2000s, playing my monthly residency in legendary nightclub Lagerhaus, the afterhours opened its doors at six in the morning and lasted until 2 or 3 p.m. An era, enriched by a thankful crowd, gifted with an incredibly high level of musical openness, and - unimaginable today - dance floors without cell phones and instagramming.

In my representation of modern afterhour, it means coming home from wherever you were before. Too excited to go to sleep, so, what could be nicer than listening to well-tempered music that gives our mind muse and space for reflection.

Manakinz are Scottish duo James ‘Harri’ Harrigan and Max Raskin. One part synonymous with the monumental Sub Club and his Subculture residency going strong for 30 years, and one of Glasgow’s best kept secrets, Max Raskin, formerly of the Liquid Lounge and Sunday Circus.

Initially Harri & Max were just sending out tracks to friends in the know, but when Andrew Weatherall picked up the blower to say he was loving what they were doing, they upped the ante and have since been putting out on Let’s Play House, Future Boogie, Monologues, Refuge and Mitchell Street. There are plenty more projects to come in ’24 with Jasper James (Harri’s son) and for Ashley Beedle’s North Street. Watch this space.

For their second release on Model Citizenz – the imprint created to house their vast dungeon of music created from endless hours tinkering and foot tapping - Manakinz come again with WHIM! The seven cuts on this maxi EP represent their take on a dystopian future, where the dark overlord ‘His Lordship Whim’ bends the world to his unique desires. Expect some dark, dubbed-out disco and euphoric strokes for different folks. Something for all the family to put a smile on your feet and hairs on your chest. Made for proper dancefloors and dark places. It is not for the faint-hearted.
