In my estimation, Fats was the greatest bebop trumpeter. Dizzy had more influence, and of course lasted much longer (Fats was only 26 when he died, a tragedy). I think the reason Fats was underestimated was that his playing was so secure: with Diz, you felt he was always flirting with disaster. A comparison would be between Louis Armstrong and Henry Red Allen. In that case, Armstrong was unquestionably the greater, but Allen's style was, like Diz, always on the edge and appears less secure and all the more exciting for that.
