In this charmingly amateur debut episode, my ex-colleague Jof tries to get me to piss off because I keep calling him while he's at work, I talk a bit about how utterly shit it is to lose your job and sit at home alone all day, and then I interview Poppy and Iris from Girl Ray about their year gone by and play their excellent Christmas single, I Wish I Was Giving You A Gift This Christmas. Nitetime is the new production duo from Boston, USA comprised of Kon (from Kon & Amir) and Whisky Baron which was first sent to us by fellow Bostonians - Soul Clap. Nitetime’s debut EP Jive Talk sits between OG boom bap hip hop - with its tough drums and grooved up interludes - and the 4/4 rhythms of classic house and disco. It also comes packed with a little more history than meets the eye…

Who better to describe the tracks and history than Kon himself?

"All the People" is a classic throwback to 88-92 era of house, lots of 909s and what not, "Teddys Jam " is sort of a deeper, slower late night track, dark and moody with banging drums and "Jive Talk" is a crazy sounding synth riff, George Duke-ish block party vibe… congas and stuff going on.

Then the interludes in between kinda tie the tunes together. I feel thats missing from EP's and full lengths... and I've never heard it done on dance records. De la Soul and Pete Rock would have these amazing little beats, and its just bringing it back."

On the digital EP you can pick up Soul Clap’s extra laidback remix of Hey! which was specially mixed by Lee Curtis of Spectral Sound / Get Physical fame. This also marks Soul Clap’s second remix on Future Classic - hopefully you’ve checked out their chunky drum remix of Mario & Vidis euro anthem ‘Changed’!

The EP has only just been pressed to wax and it's already picking up love from Gilles Peterson, Jacques Renault, Eli Escobar, Soul Clap, Recloose, Frank Booker, Karizma, Lefto from Belgium and Lovemonk in Madrid. Don't let this record slip through those dusty fingers of yours.

Returning to Beats in Space after their debut 12" (and the label's debut release) in the fall of 2011, Paradis offers "Hémisphère" and "Je m'ennuie", another pair of sophisticatedly crafted, noir-pop songs from the young Parisian duo.

On the two tracks of their second 12", Paradis self-reflect to find an escape hatch away from themselves. The A-Side, "Hémisphère", a macabre story of a lonely guest of life determined to leave everything behind, defies the narrative's convention and captivates with pop melodies and up beats abound.

On the B-Side, "Je M'ennuie", lovers settle into late-night melancholic routines soundtracked by a brooding bass line, an achingly affective synth lead, and vocals that grin behind the disaffected front. Ultimately, hope prevails as both tracks beg the listener to leave their headphones behind for the global village's dance floor. From Paris to Cologne, from Buenos Aires to New York, in the words of Michel Polnareff, "On ira tous au Paradis."

Each 12" from Beats in Space features original artwork in considerate & serial form. The first 12" features artwork by Denise Kupferschmidt, a Brooklyn-based artist finding inner / outer space in the movement of line and assemblage of color. The 12" packaging constructed by Will Work For Good features a vinyl BIS logo cling. The 12" will be available on May 22nd, 2012 from fine retailers worldwide. Oh, The Records I Could Have Played...

Moshi Moshi Records started off as a hobby in 1998. Set up by three friends who had jobs working for major record labels. It was intended as a way of working with the bands that they loved but which didn’t fit in with the agenda of the day-job taskmasters. Early single releases from Zan Lyons, Kathryn Williams & Pedro and J Xaverre earned the label some plaudits. And sold a few records. Over the next five years Moshi Moshi slowly started to build a reputation for interesting, slightly leftfield, low-key releases. Then in 2004 things changed. For a start Moshi stopped being a hobby and became a fulltime job. Very soon after, Hot Chip and Bloc Party arrived and Moshi Moshi quickly became a name known to more than a few. Chart success followed with Yeti and The Rakes and higher-profile album releases from Architecture In Helsinki and Au Revoir Simone helped lift the label onto a new level. Then from 2006 onwards came artists such as Hot Club De Paris, Tilly And The Wall, The Wave Pictures, Slow Club, James Yuill, The Drums, Summer Camp, the list goes on.

In late 2006 the two remaining Moshi Moshi founders decided they wanted to get back to their one-off 7” release roots and the Moshi Moshi Singles Club was born. The intention was to try and release one 7” each month by a new up-and-coming artist. It would be limited to 1000 and only be available in a select group of indie stores. The artwork would be restricted to one colour and be designed by the bands themselves. Now some 40+ releases later the singles club’s roster makes an impressive list – (including) Kate Nash, Late of The Pier, Friendly Fires, Lykke Li, Florence and The Machine, Kindness, Dananananayckroyd. Disclosure. In 2011 Moshi Moshi expanded its remit by partnering up with some very talented young A&R folk to set up the imprints Tender Age, Not Even, Apricot and Dream Beach. Working under the Moshi Moshi umbrella these new labels have already yielded a clutch of exciting releases by artists from as far afield as Kenya and Seattle.

At the same time as running the record label Moshi Moshi Management has been quietly guiding the career of Metronomy and Slow Club as well as producers Ash Workman and Ollie Bayston. From 2012 this side of the business started to expand dramatically and now features a sizeable roster of emerging artists.

Looking back on the Moshi Moshi roster (particularly since the label ‘went fulltime’ in 2004) it’s a collection that bears comparison with any of its peers. For a label run by two people with no financial backing, it’s nothing short of an inspiration.
