Mexico City’s Paurro is the next artist to release on marginalized gender focused label SOS Music. Having been quickly recognised and taken on by the Discwoman collective, Paurro has been making a noise in the electronic world with RA, Mixmag and DJ Mag all singing her praises, as well as being resident at Mexico City’s YuYu Club & Funk Club.

With Onna-Bugeisha being her biggest EP yet, you can understand through listening to each track that she’s really thought carefully about the ideas and themes around the release, resulting in a beautifully eclectic package of five solid, interesting and unique bodies of work.

In reflection to the unsettling femicide rate in Mexico which has been causing political stir in the country, Paurro wanted to explore themes around female warriors and forgotten women. The EP title is a term referring to female samurai warriors that existed in pre-modern Japan, whose legacy was ultimately erased from history because of their gender, in response the tracks are in ode to those forgotten women, each in their different way.

Out in the streets there was a party kicking off. The summer heat had finally kicked in and kids danced beneath burst fire hydrants whilst parents sat and watched from their porches. Music played loudly and the smell of a grill was thick upon the occasional breeze which blew through. This would go on late...

Cars began to arrive one by one, the boom and rumble of a sound system could be heard from down the way and it would be no time at all before the boys turned up to show off whatever wild juke they'd been working on that week. Their feet would move fast and free as the stresses of the week were unleashed against a backdrop of breaks and wicked drums. 

Eventually the cops might show up to slow proceedings but they knew it would all kick right off again the moment they left. This was the summer in full flow...

Joe Howe is set to release a new record on Acid Waxa - a playful release which wanders between styles and genres all with a glitchy, chaotic feel throughout which makes for quite the trip. This track is called 'Wild Juke' and is a sort of mutated crossover between the traditional sounds associated with the genre and an erratic computer video game.

Enemy Records returns from a short hiatus to soundtrack a summer of questionable choices and excess. This year marks Enemy’s 20th anniversary, and will feature appearances from current label mainstays with some of their strongest releases yet.

The first release comes courtesy of Jay York, an upcoming US-based DJ and Producer currently residing in New York. Aside from running his own label “TOCA” alongside Decoder, he was handpicked by Richie for the 2023 “From Our Minds To Yours” North American Tour. Making his Enemy debut with “Alto,” Jay delivers 4 purist 90s inspired Techno cuts with precision.

Sworn starts off the EP with pensive melody work backed with drums providing just the right amount of punch to keep it light-footed, without being overpowering. Alto tosses that formula out the window and goes in heavy on the low end. Combined with hypnotic synths and f-u snare drums, Alto is the perfect track to drop during the heads down moments in DJ sets.

Agresiva is true to name. As the most relentless track on the release, Agresiva offers up a bouncy high energy workout for when the dance floor is heaving shoulder to shoulder at peak time. Locked In is another deep roller that will fit perfectly alongside so many different records, making it a versatile track for clever DJs. Migrant finishes off the EP with pummeling 909 drums and a synth that’s perfect for building up and maintaining tension.
