After a bit of a hiatus we're back in full swing at Exotic HQ, and absolutely gassed to get Boundary onto the label with a transcendent double LP that hits you right in the feels.
Hailing from the Dominican Republic, Boundary is a producer that we’ve had an eye on for a while, putting out music with a maturity and depth well beyond his years. Sometimes brilliantly raw and gritty, at other times delicate and refined, he leans heavily on all the good stuff from early Detroit techno, UK & Japanese ambient, and leftfield techno, stitching things together with immaculate drum programming, wandering basslines and ethereal pads. Ranging from deep, glassy ambient through to 140 bpm (and beyond!) pumpers, this is classy techno from start to finish. Think Aphex Twin meets PLO Man with an early Detroit twist. PREMIERE: Boundary - Las Aves Ya Saben Donde Ir

Justin Drake and Clive Henry, recognised as the legendary Peace Division, stood out as one of the UK's most successful tribal/tech house production duos from the late 90s to the mid-00s. Their contributions extended to renowned British labels such as NRK and Junior London, as well as releases with Hooj, Crosstown Rebels, and major label remixes.  Lesser known but equally intriguing was their venture into a different musical realm under the alias, Soul Purpose. Shifting towards a deeper shade of house music, Soul Purpose featured tracks characterised by lush chords and rolling basslines, placing a strong emphasis on the soulful elements.
Originally released on Low Pressing Limited, an offshoot label of Clive Henry and Rocky (X-Press 2) iconic Low Pressing, the four Soul Purpose titles emerged between 1997 and 1998. Despite being somewhat under the radar, these tracks gained recognition among DJs in the know. Now, the ‘Selected Works’ release, compiled from the original DAT tapes and fully remastered, reunites the entire Soul Purpose catalogue for the first time in 27 years since their initial release.

The night was young but already the music was loud as they drove further and further away from the city and into the countryside. Soon it would be dark and they’d begin the hunt. It was the same skit every weekend, the same places and faces looking for fun on the outskirts of town.

This old car had miles under its belt, it had been to fields and warehouses all over the South coast in the search of dancing and delight.

It was the hunter itself, powered only by the mischief of its passengers.

Retromigration channels elements of House, Trance and beyond on a fast and furious new EP for Handy Records. However, beneath the pace sits a deep rooted groove which can be hard to place without careful consideration and handling. This is a producer in top form.

Ah, Byron, Byron, Byron—what can we say? We're absolutely enamoured with this guy's music. And, we couldn't be more thrilled to welcome him into our family on Low Recordings.

We are back with our second vinyl release, featuring Byron's "Love 4 Music." This 4-track EP is a celebration of love, with Side A and Side B showcasing two distinct styles where Byron truly shines. Side A delivers the club hits, while Side B envelops us in a soulful/R&B/deep house vibe.

Kicking off Side A is "Creepin' With U." The track begins with haunting chords that exude an eerie and raw vibe, swiftly leading into a thumping, club-certified kick drum. As the song progresses, a hint of nostalgia from the lo-fi days creeps in, complemented by vocal samples that add to the eerie atmosphere. Yes, it's eerie, but it's also robust and captivating—perfect for enticing bodies to move on a warehouse dance floor.

Next up is "Work That Girl (Tribal Mix)," the heavyweight of the four, tailor-made for the club/warehouse scene. The track starts with the clicking and clacking of hats and snares, Byron's vocals weaving in and out of the mix. The lyrics are crafted for a sweaty night of dancing, and as the kicks thump in, the energy rises. Byron's trademark chords seamlessly ooze into the mix, uniting our bodies with the song. Acid-sounding notes eventually lead us in and out of the groove—a solid club anthem.

Flipping over to Side B, we're greeted by "Inner Visions," where Byron slows things down and takes us in a different direction. A classic synth line initiates the track with a smooth kick, creating an airy vibe that melds perfectly with its melody. As the song grooves, Byron's soulful vocals pierce through, infusing warmth into his words. The warmth persists as the song progresses, with his voice echoing slightly more dissonance, leaving us with a proper vision for the closing track.

Closing out the EP, Byron guides us with a vision for a fun night in "Make Me Feel." Deep with a touch of R&B, the song exudes warmth and is all about feeling good with the person who got you through the night. Byron's sultry voice sits perfectly on the track as the basslines guide us through. His playful nature keeps things light and fun, rounding off the EP on a high note.

PREMIERE: Byron The Aquarius - Inner Visions [Low Recordings]

After a brief hiatus, the SlothBoogie Records crew are back with an exceptional label debut from Danvers. You may know him as one half of UK duo ‘Kassian’ who have previously released on SB, but here he flies solo with 4 tracks of expertly produced electronic, acid washed breaks.

Whether it be the liquid tinged euphoria of ‘Angel Break’, the speaker wobbling brute that is ‘YOU&ME’, the saturated acid warmth of ‘Heat’ or the otherworldly journey of ‘Distant Recalls’, this EP is the mark of someone who is a master of their craft and poised to heavily influence the sound of clubs with his unmistakable style.

Rounding off the EP is LA native and underground House devotee Juliet Mendoza who re-shapes ‘YOU&ME’ into a thumping 4/4 workout, primed for the late hours when the strobes come out.

2024 gets underway, Oath are thrilled to share the imprint’s latest long play, which comes courtesy of rising star Moonee - and you better believe its a solid gold stunner…

Francois Lefevre, the producer behind the Moonee name - alongside his group projects Twice Movement and Simple Request (with French House royalty Tour-Maubourg) - really optimizes all that is bold and beautiful about the House genre. The release of ‘Wabi Sabi’ on Groovence in 2022, then ‘Primal Groove’ on Slothboogie last year, has already helped Lefevre craft a significant space for himself under the Moonee name. His sound is one of tremendous melodic feel, with a plethora of rhythmic patterns and atmospheres being utilised to help create a bountiful sonic universe. His attention to how the groove unravels and how progression can be used softly but subtly really comes over strong, immersing the listener in a very warm place indeed. As beginnings to discographies go, this start is immensely strong, and one which provides a rock solid basis for all sorts of excellence to come forth.

Two EPs down, and now this fantastic long play. Moonee really flexed his style and craft on this record, one which constantly delighted at every turn, providing an enriching spectrum of sounds that stick true to his production technique and to his craft. Not for one second do you stand still, but merely carried along on a wave of melodic euphoria, simply pleased to be along for the ride. The dips from heavy hitting though to softly spoken at handled so well, and as a result we are left with a pretty damn good way to enter in 2024. Winter has arrived, but warm your heart with this stunner.

PREMIERE: Moonee - Evening World

Zopelar returns to Tartelet with Ritmo Freak, an electric eight-track album from the beating heart of the Brazilian underground, out May 10.

In a flurry of madcap sampling pitched towards the heat of the night, Pedro Zopelar builds on the premise of his 2022 electro-funk love letter Charme, shifting his approach towards a particular 90s flair and a method with a specific end result.

Ritmo Freak took root in studio experiments for a momentous — and rare — live set at São Paulo festival Não Existe in 2023, where Zopelar was caught up in one of those right-place, right-time moments we carry with us through life. As he explains himself:

“This album is dedicated to freaky club culture. While I was playing at the festival there was a crazy tropical storm outside and the room was packed with the freakiest crowd. I've tried hard to immortalize that feeling on this record."

With the intended energy in mind, Zopelar focused on a particular mode of production centred around 12-bit sampling from his ample record collection.

Considering his background as a trained pianist, here his musical instincts are forced to work within the limitations of short, snappy cuts from dusty 12”s. The lo-fi sound sources and the resourceful ways Zopelar works them gives the record an unmistakable old-skool flavour which he applies to forthright house, techno and electro funk rhythms, always taking care to draw out the soul of the music.

The stylistic touchstones flow past thick and fast on Ritmo Freak. From the amped up fierceness of the title track with its gaudy, cut n’ paste, vintage techno flavour to the effervescent electro funk of ‘Gabriellinha’s Boogie’ on to the surreal Balearic inversion of ‘Distraction’, this is a high-velocity, endlessly charming record bursting with the musicality Zopelar has made his name on.

As the driving force behind many warehouse parties in São Paulo, Zopelar has been immersed in club culture for a long time, and his distinctive catalogue of jazz, funk, acid and techno has graced highly respected labels like Apron, Selva Discos and Mother Tongue. Throughout, he’s displayed an affinity for the tangled roots of the groove with an open-eared, big-hearted sound. That’s what comes through on Ritmo Freak — a record as infectious as it is well- informed.
