Sounds of Lava Lava kicks off 2023 with the debut release from Glasgow-based artist Neuro Dive. Hailing from Aberdeen, Blair Mackie shows his depth of sound and already well-honed musical styling with his ‘Take Me Higher’ EP, channelling influences from House, Techno, Breaks & Italo.

On his debut, Blair says ‘I'm honestly so happy and proud to be joining Sounds of Lava Lava with my forthcoming EP. I had loads of fun with this record, drawing inspiration from some of my favourite memories and sounds from the clubbing scene whilst using melodic elements to try and capture those feelings.’

7am With You wastes no time in setting a high energy as a breaks-inspired drum pattern leads into arpeggiated synthesisers and a sub-heavy bass line. This, combined with swirling vocals and intricately designed atmospherics, gives a club-focussed track reminiscent of Bicep or DJ Seinfeld.

Occlusion builds an emotional energy straight from the start as floating synth lines and wandering keys build through the first minute. Powerful kicks and a big bass line break the tension while chopped vocal samples and wispy synths give the track an emphatic drive.

Title track Take Me Higher is a seven-minute Italo-infused bomb with chugging bass lines, plucky stabs and euphoric synths. Blair works his magic throughout the track, bouncing old-school elements alongside tripped-out vocals to create a proper club workout.

Night Dreaming rounds of Blair’s debut with thumping kicks, sharp percussion and squelching bass. A mesmerising voice leads through the track as bubbling synths and hazy atmospherics draw you further into this hypnotic groove.

Only the second release here from Scruscru sub-label Scruniversal. At the controls is Latvia's Will Sonic, whose work has previously appeared on the likes of Late Night Jackin', Sundries, Gents & Dandy's and Moodyhouse, and who now serves up two more prime slices of deep house goodness for your dancing pleasure. 'Fugazi' is a late-night kinda cut with a pleasing garage-y bump that makes it the pick for this reviewer, but the accompanying 'Right Vibe' is no slouch either, with a hypnotic warping vocal and the kind of delicate keys that mean it wouldn't sound out of place on Madhouse.
