Josh Cheon (Dark Entries Records) | Live on HydeFM | 04/12/21

The second entry in the series of digital EP from Paris-area label Syrinx Music, Quantité de Matière offers a travel through the futuristic universe of Futurstress. Though this is the first time this name appears on a project, this isn’t a debut EP: as DLGHT, the producer came to light as the co-founder of ABRICATALOG, an unmissable label of the Paris scene, as well as the author of previous projects, on Planisphere for instance.

Quantité de Matière’s four tracks wander through reconstructed bass music, built on complex rhythm, crystalline sound textures and unplanned shifts. “For Ever” opens the EP with an ambient breeze, quickly propelled into drum&bass in its most adventurous forms. “For Your Sixty” melts icy sounds and deep, weirdly warm melancholy, while the percussion seems to evolve on its own, shaping its own changes. “Interclasse” follows with similar inventiveness: more light permeates through the mix, but the track remains characterized by the same sense of balance & tension that one may find in the entire EP. Closing track “Quantité de Matière” loops the loop getting back to the higher BPMs of the opening track, in a beautiful melodic sigh.

Taking cues from bass music in its more open forms, Quantité de Matière displays an original take on these sounds, both dynamic and contemplative, reaching for ambient, IDM or experimental energies. A tightly-crafted work of art, in which every single element seems finely-tuned and precisely placed in order to interact with the overall balance. As such, Futurstress delivers an EP that is both complex and intuitive, in line with Syrinx Music’s aesthetics, at the crossroads between the lab and the club.

Futurstress :

A transdisciplinary artist, Futurstress was, until now, mostly known as DLGHT, the co-founder of ABRICATALOG, an exciting label that proved able to connect the worlds of instrumental hip hop and exploratory bass music with those of pop and rock. Futurstress is a producer and DJ as well as an accomplished visual artist. His productions and DJ Sets explore the fertile grounds between footwork, d&b, breaks as well as ambient, drone and much more, with a sense of the narrative and of experimentation, as evidenced by his previous projects on Planisphère or ABRICATALOG. He is also a resident on London-based Threads Radio. Quantité de Matière is his first project under this new alias.

☯ A little more information about this upcoming DIY camping festival ☯
Gradient was conceived by two LA event/party spaces, New Palm and Print Shop, and occurs annually during springtime in Johnson Valley (two hours from LA). I can’t say enough good things about this DIY festival—everyone looks after each other, sharing food, drinks, and camping supplies.

The land, owned by Bear Glass, almost seemed to be landscaped with a small, music festival in mind. It features dedicated areas for parking, a camping area, and a speaker stage, not to mention the wildflowers were blooming all around us. Bear also runs a loudspeaker design and manufacturing company, Mobius Acoustics. This year's sound system included four Synergy Horns added to the PA, built by John Clements (the sound technician for Gradient and Bear’s next-door neighbor) and Anthony Bisset (a founding member of Mobius Acoustics).

My personal opinion: it’s my favorite camping festival in Southern California.

Regarding the recording, I utilized an Ableton Live session as a third channel to generate psychedelic, harmonic, and haunting textures alongside two channels of CDJs. I use this kind of like a sonic glue to transition between songs in different keys. The goal of this set was to take you on a sonic journey for the heart and mind, balancing light with moments of darkness, and from early to new electronic music. Enjoy :)
