Sound of the silence

Some binaural recordings from the time I went on holiday to Tokyo.  I stayed in Sangubashi from the 15th of December 2013 until the 14th of January 2014.   Recordings mostly done in and around Sangubashi, Yoyogi, Ueno, Meguro, and Shinjuki.  Recorded with DIY binaural mics and a Sony PCM-D50 sound recorder.

"Once you've been out there, you can never return." - lamented the guy, watching out the window, still high from yesterday's galactic rave. "Even at home, you're still out there. On a transfer station. Waiting for the next ship." A large flock of spacegulls flown by, and with the setting of the Sombrero Galaxy, the whole thing looked pretty amazing.  But then, something weird happened.

This one is for the dreamers - first up is ‘AA’ from newcomer T. Margos; it's your ultimate chance to cop that secret banger that's been blowing up dance-floors from London to Budapest this year. It's a tricky one - taking your mind into the stars with deep spacey pads, but yet working your body with the raw 303 bass and painfully heavy 909 treatment. Next on the A-side, Swiss wunderkind Douala's turn to fuel that spaceship of your dreams. ‘It’s All in Your Mind’ soothes your soul with dubby space echos, tear jerking chord progressions and a dreamy acid bassline.

As we slip into the lucid state of the dream, over on the B-side Ray Kandinski’s ‘Dirty Sneakers’ pieces together the kind dimension shifting dream-state that Disneyland could barely imagine. When those vocals and pads kick in, combined with the tricky beats everything becomes a wash of surrealism and logic – and it all happens just in time for you to awake into yet another dream, this time deep within your sub-conscious on ‘Walk Through’ by the mysterious DJ Lucy with Mike L. A nostalgic trip to your most beautiful memories, with uplifting flutes and Juno chords.

"Hélices" Brazilian producer Superficie ’s EP is all about Club, Baile Funk and Ambient moods. Inspired by socio-economic conflicts from his country of origin, as well as in the advances of biotechnology of our era, robotic insects and expressive percussion surround us throughout a chase in south of the Amazon. It comes with four original tracks and two intriguing remixes by Armenian-American foozool and Venezuelan-American umurmurum.

It’s like all you ever thought to have known is put into question. Opening with a thumping, rough and sturdy bang, Raär strikes Susan back with a subtle killer that makes you wonder whether your monitors have blown up. Rest assured, they haven’t. Complete distortion but total control.

And then, suddenly, you remember that girl you used to talk to all the time. She’s alone now, and she’s gently whispering in your ears, not knowing what to say. Synths do the rest of the talking, whilst the glittery waves sprinkle in the faraway landscape. When She’s Alone makes you think, it makes you feel like you’re in a room packed with people but every detail surpasses you, almost making you feel like you “weren’t there”. Speak up, because she wants to hear your voice.

The casualness in Sports Casual gives you a moment to take a whiff of fresh air. The xylophonic drops resemble the sweat that slowly makes its way down your freshly ironed tank top. Once you have gathered your senses, you just casually keep running up that hill until you peak. Rick’s tunes are both a motivation and an ode to anyone who has ever doubted the sexiness of hot pants and vintage velour bomber jackets. Combine that with a ‘stache and a pair of sunglasses a mid ’80s porn director would wear and you are the disco ball of all disco balls.

On a completely different edge, it’s the moustache man himself who blesses us with casual, sporty bumpers. Monk Nash never slows down, it just keeps going. Ever been at the gym and felt like you wanted to give up? Rick Sheen will make sure you won’t.

On the Solar Side I Hate Models delivers Cyanure Dance an epic voyage full of emotional intensity, stretched across an insistent acid bass line, psychedelic punk-wave distortion, stratospheric arpeggios and ethereal vocals courtesy of the artist himself.

On the Lunar side Vittorio Di Mango presents Epilessia aimed straight to the jugular, a peak-time dance-floor destroyer constructed with machine gun precision over crystalline snares and opiated vocal reverberations.

Between them they form the Nigredo Edition.

Coming in from straight outta Hamburg for his debut on Upon.You Records is the notorious Dr. Dru who has built up a massive reputation and following as a part of the hanseatic JEUDI Records camp throughout the past years in which he played a role both as a producer and resident DJ at the camps parties of the same name.With the title track Corner Ball we see Dr. Dru kicking some serious ass on the dancefloor, bringing on a techy intro sequence and a rapid build-up for all fans of ever busy midrange synth wildpitch efforts whilst on point filter excess, metallic percussion bits and clean, yet screaming sci-fi tones provide extra fuel for full-on devastation.Dondo, the second tune on this single, focuses on a still techy, yet more hypnotic vibe for the wee hours, introducing ultimate darkness in terms of massive bass waves and eerie atmospheres accompanied by layers upon layers of cut up vocal bits and a subtle overall presence of ghostly, mysterious, multi-dimensional entities feeding of the energies provided by a heaving dancefloor.

Fresh from providing Futureboogie’s pivotal 50th release back in March, Christophe leads the charge on the label’s annual Summer Riot compilation EP, now on its sixth installment.  On “West Side Critters”, a bold and brooding kick drum that the early acid pioneers would be proud of, tethers a malleable acid bassline to its stable pattern, whilst incessant cow bells, distant tom hits and metallic piano chords pep up the production for another class track from Christophe. The Mexican duo, Zombies In Miami, have impressed for labels like Love On The Rocks and Correspondent over the years, and bring their own brand of spiritual dance to the Summer Riot party.  A collage of colour erupts on “The Legends Of The Hidden Temple” premiered here, with sitars, guitars, vocals and synths all weaving their magic over a chugging house beat with a bubbling acid underbelly. Formerly one half of previous FBR recording artists, Lizards, Lee Forster teams up with Ollie Warriner (Tunnyl Records) for a their new Forriner project, contributing the excellent “Spero” to the comp. Warming pads glide over lazy percussive beats, as a piano motif holds the breakdown before kickstarting the track to its glorious groovy finale. Bringing the Summer Riot VI to a cosmically charged ending, Yuki Tosaya channels the spirits of 1990’s ambient house in a superb track titled “Acid Dawn Breaks”.  Chugging, transcendental house at its finest, Tosaya teases 303s, piano riffs and cascading synths in a production that will no doubt see the break of dawn at many gatherings for a good while to come.

Following the course of the Afon Mellte in the Brecon Beacons and through Porth yr Ogof, the largest cave entrance in Wales.

This sonic journey follows the river coursing over rocks, cascades and through the cave system where water trickles through cracks in the cave roof.

Best listened to with headphones.
