[Premiere] Nikes - CRASHED OUT (VA Welcome to the Hyperdome II out now via Hyperdome)

"Compliments is a non-binary dance music producer from Huddersfield, based in London. Their work is heavily influenced by the percussive UK styles of jungle, garage and bassline, with a pinch of nü-metal’s distortion and adolescent energy thrown in for good measure.

Tomgirl, their newest release on Mantissa, showcases these stylistic influences across four tracks that move between wonky 4/4 techno, amen-heavy jungle, spacey 140 and swampy chugging house, playing with the idea of floating somewhere between masculinity and femininity, hard and soft.

After experimenting with samples of their own voice on their debut album ‘The place where my voice should be’ (self-released in March 2022), the EP builds on this technique to create eerie atmospherics and strange rhythms in a more club-focused and dance floor orientated zone.

Tomgirl is topped off with a remix by Bristol’s Bex, channeling a potent strain of bassy, stepping techno that her productions and DJ sets have become famous for."

Raised down under and now based between London and LA, AK Sports’ productions, DJ sets and Balamii shows are a melting pot of rave flavours, equally inspired by the old school as the new.

This makes for a truly unique, easily identifiable sound that combines computer-love, retro acid synths (‘Robots Are Forever’) and anthemic piano stabs (‘Sayulita’) with futuristic, cosmic soundscapes; and industrial techno, with MPC claps and reverberating breaks (‘Kurrupt’, ‘Xoxo’). Never one to be pinged into a distinctive style of music, his current releases have explored garage, broken beat, jazz, and deep house - bringing his wicked ear for hip hop blends into the spotlight. ‘Midnight City Joints’ EP merges these styles into a piece for rolling in the streets. A sun-setting EP shining with v-i-b-e-s.

Compared to the rest of the EP, ‘It’s Real’ is a slightly more relaxing affair, as flowing piano lines are submerged in textures that cascade like rain. Clever sound design ricochets from one squelch to the next, opening the mind to new and unknown realms.

This one does exactly what it says on the tin.
