From the hard rocking (Ew3a) to the melancholic (Dualisme), i'm sure there's something for everyone on this album. 1944 includes songs in Arabic and English as well as two instrumentals thrown in for good measure. Some were selected due to their popularity during live performances and some were a personal favorite of mine. This work is the assertion of a woman’s will to live and express herself freely, beyond schisms and differences. To express a critical yet loving point of view of the world, a world that is slowly changing its point of view of women, offering them a new place to stand in, a bigger role to play than ever before.

A woman, an oriental woman, comes back home after having had to live several years abroad, due to the political situation in her country. She feels sort of lost and torn in her identity. Who is she? What role is hers in this society? Is she a French educated city girl? A jazz musician ? An intellectual ? A political activist ? A sex symbol ? A mother ? Is she just tender and sentimental? Is she a constant fighter seeking justice and equality? Who is she? A modern, active young person ? A Business woman ? Does she have to chose ? Who is she ? Is she Eastern? Is she western? How can she restrain her inner richness and multiplicity: a strong, beautiful, struggling woman trying to get in touch with her inner self, energetically yet lovingly, with all the generosity and power of a woman!

“Laka Anta” is the title of Rabea Beirut’s fist album, including 5 instrumentals and 5 songs, in addition to Fouad Abed Al Majid’s “mouwashah”: Aajaban Li Ghazal, produced in 2009.

The album’s works were completed in Beirut, during the period stretching from 2004 till late 2008, thus reflecting the critical reality Lebanon endured throughout those years. The tracks’ order serves an ascendant mood, translated by new instruments, various arrangements, and leading to an increasing musical expressivity.

All those new features are not an attempt to break with the cultural achievements of the 19th and 20th century of Arab music, but serve more accurately the angry and anguish mood, its anxious expectation, leading to a lighter ease; many ways of expression combining oriental and western music, for as many states of mind. 

With the completion of the 5 musical pieces, Nadine’s multi-toned voice brings even more dramatic layers to the songs, and contributes in building the figurative poetic content in Samih Al Kasem’s and Palestinian poet Samar Jaber’s works, in various dimensions from love and passion, to rebellion and anger, While the selection of deceased poet Abed Al Majid Al Mestqawi’s beautiful “mouwashah”: Aajaban Li Ghazal, might seem at first as a clear identification to the Egyptian Arabic music school, the door is open to contemporary arrangement techniques in addition to modern enterprises and experiences in the Middle East, from Egypt to Lebanon to Palestine. 

The ascendant electric temper of the CD reaches its paroxysm with Tamer Abu Ghazaleh’s visionary interpretation of “Ya Abana”, the last track, reaching explosive madness.

Tamer Abu Ghazaleh's debut album Mir'ah (Mirror) was released in 2008. Recorded with a group of Palestinian and Egyptian performers, the record’s seven turbulent, entrancing and sometimes frenzied songs were written during a turbulent period of demonstrations, bombardment and invasion of Palestinian cities. Composed during curfews, the album expresses everyday human emotions – love, hate, comfort, boredom, excitement – that were informed by the unreal experience of living in Palestine during that period.

Rabih Beirut - Laka Anta ربيع بيروت - لك انت

Sard (Narration, in Arabic) is a unique music production from Palestine. In it the authenticity of the oud language is highly maintained, yet refreshing new expressions and rhythms are achieved through the dialogues with other instruments such as the double bass, the qanoun and the percussion.

The album includes five pieces composed by Nizar Rohana: Sard, Umm El Zeinat, Iraq, Ajam, and Hijaz. In addition, two familiar tunes were specially arranged for this recording: Sama’i Farahfaza by Jamil Al-Tanbouri, and Ya rayeh sawb bladi by Ahmad Qaabour.

The participating musicians on the album are Nizar Rohana - oud, Hani Assad - percussion, Geoffroi Delori - double bass, Waffa Zaghal - qanoun, and Khaled Jubran - musical supervision. This production was partly financed by Cultural Resource (Egypt) in collaboration with Al-Urmawi Centre (Palestine).
