Pre- and Perinatal Psychology/Therapy with Dr. Cherionna Menzam-Sills, #EmergentHuman

Ostrolenk speaks with Dr. Thomas R. Verny, a psychiatrist, writer, lecturer, and academic. Dr. Verny is the founder of PPPANA (now APPPAH), served as its President from 1983 to 1991. Verny was founding editor of the Pre- and Peri-Natal Psychology Journal of which he is presently Associate Editor. Dr. Verny is author of The Secret Life of the Unborn Child with John Kelly, Pre-Parenting with Pamela Weintraub. In total, he has written eight books including the recently published The Embodied Mind and over 47 scientific papers. Dr. Verny discusses what inspired him to pursue a career in Pre- and Peri-Natal Psychology, including clients’ accounts of early memories that called into question mainstream thinking on the topic. Dr. Verny also details the disproportionate medical focus on the brain, while memories are also held throughout our body. Greater focus on the rest of the body will improve our capacity to understand and treat disease, introspection, and – ultimately – our free will.

The Embodied Mind with Dr. Thomas Verny, #EmergentHuman

Ostrolenk speaks with Jan Winhall, author of “Treating Trauma and Addiction with the Felt Sense Polyvagal Model: A Bottom-Up Approach" (https://www.amazon.com/Treating-Trauma-Addiction-Sense-Polyvagal/dp/0367408120). Winhall details her history with treating trauma and addiction and how she came to understand addiction not as a disease but as a means of coping with trauma. Addition occurs, Winhall explains, naturally when individuals do not feel safe and are unable to socially engage. We also live in cultures that do not support engagement and grounding, which is further detailed within the five stages of oppression in Winhall’s book. Lastly, Ostrolenk and Winhall discuss practices for transitioning out of fight, flight or freeze states to grounded self-regulated and socially engaged states.

Dr Rubik talks about her research into the effects of electromagnetic fields (EMFs) on the cells, the human biofield and therefore the totality of the human biological systems.

Ostrolenk speaks with Russ Greene, Director of Government Relations and Research for CrossFit, on potential regulations that threaten CrossFit operations and more broadly on how these legislative actions represent the regulatory capture prevalent in our country. Since its founding in 2003, CrossFit has grown to encompass 14,000 gyms and affiliated business, all of which are broadly permitted to set their own rules of operation. Legislation has since been proposed that requires personal trainers to have licenses to operate that excludes CrossFit credentials as a qualifying license. This would require CrossFit trainers to obtain licensing from the competitors who are lobbying for this legislation. Greene further explains the role of the food and beverage industry behind the advocacy for this legislation, and how it has resulted in regulatory capture of the organizations – including the CDC – who are tasked with protecting the American consumer. Today’s guest is Ryan Frisinger, an interdisciplinary specialist operating at the intersections of medicine, consciousness and culture.

Ostrolenk and Frisinger discuss the complex relationship of humans and animals, including the ownership of animals and the ethics of eating meat. Frisinger details the complexity of meat consumption, including the importance of animal protein in human diets, the ways in which killing animals has evolved in the modern world, and how we can feed the large number of people who live on this earth.  

Frisinger encourages listeners to use higher levels of consciousness to entertain the idea that our pets have a complex emotional life that cannot be fully understood by humans. This can assist in humans endeavor to walk a fine line between being caretakers and allies while understanding there is limited room on earth for all animals to roam free. Lastly, Frisinger offers that humans can consider how our own reproduction affects other species.

Frisinger recommends a few actions humans can take to foster a loving relationship and support their animals: 
-       Look at your animals diet and consider the value of raw foods
-       Recognizing your animal's environment and what they love to explore
-       Appreciate your animal's space and try to learn their needs
