Episode 1 'The Spacestation' Radio Show (27th Jan 2014)

Earlier this year, Alessio Mereu released with his collaborative trio P.o.o.F., utilizing trumpet and guitar. Now the AMAM founder returns with a solo EP, but it’s more than just back to basics. While it does continue the progress of his techno/house productions, this might be his most conceptually ambitious release to date. The ThreeplusOne EP features three originals, plus a fourth combining elements from each, as well as three remixes from John Tejada, Ferlin and Martinez.

“Three in One” is an effervescent creation, buzzing with different life forms that ebb and flow into seemingly limitless dimensions, never losing momentum throughout its near nine-minute duration. Then we hear “Sore”, the first indicator that the three base tracks are more than just parts of the sum. This one contrasts twitchy rhythms with sinewy synth tones in the outer register, evoking strange but pleasant moods. “Overpay” is of a different species, totally dubbed out but with an unrelenting vigor. “Bagel” is comparatively sly, more stripped down but with plenty of tweaky tricks up its sleeve.

To further expand the EP’s world of sounds, Los Angeles-based John Tejada (Kompakt) transforms “Sore” into a richly electrified beauty with a Teutonic pulse, Berlin-based Sardinian Andrea Ferlin (Sleep is Commercial) strips down “Overpay” to turn it into his own dancefloor monologue, and Copenhagen’s Martinez (Cocoon) bends “Bagel” into a lip-smacking, swinging shuffle spread over 13 minutes. No matter how you do the math, ThreeplusOne adds up to be a really good time!

Magda is an artist who can never be pinned down, no matter the timeframe or time signature. Any one of the Detroit-raised artist's DJ sets or productions breeds a rare feel of mystique and discovery. "I'm really obsessed with finding a line between things - between sounds and between genres. My influences come from a life spent in very different environments, which plays a huge role in the way I connect with music."

Dramatic sounds and eccentric basslines carry her multilayered sound, which veers everywhere from funked-out space disco to the intricately-programmed, metallic feel of Detroit to stripped down techno, all the way to Italian horror film soundtracks. The only thing that remains consistent is the element of surprise.

Her accidental entry into Detroit's underground party scene as a teenager was the kick-start she needed for a lifelong love affair. Soon all became a blur of "cities, record stores, and parties." In 1998, she joined Minus and began touring the world as Richie Hawtin's sole opener. From there, her distinctive sound began to develop and the rest is history.

Stylistically, Magda grooves through opposition - creating sets that are emotion-led yet clinical, having profound expertise with analog and digital technology. Her sound is otherworldly but visceral; dark with a warm sense of beauty and grace; sparse yet wondrously full-bodied with density and bass-swathed extremes. Magda's DJing style has been encapsulated on her mixed CDs 'She's A Dancing Machine,' and her mix for London club Fabric 'Fabric 49' (a mix CD with as much artistry and vision as an original album).

In the fall of 2010, Magda revealed her debut, 'From The Fallen Page,' a darkly- tinged, transportive album that curiously combines natural, organic sounds, and modern electronic grace. Similar to her unpredictable DJ sets, 'From The Fallen Page' took listeners from one end of the spectrum to the other, treading the fine lines of extremities along the way.

These days Magda isn't home very often. In-between touring, she's fully focused on her recently resurrected label 'Items & Things.' The label's vision always pinpoints the off-kilter and the uncommon, seeking out new artists and sounds that push boundaries. "Items and things are bits and pieces of uniqueness we come across. The label is a platform to launch the music that we love. There are no rules, just sounds we like and artists we believe in."

The Planetary Assault Systems project has been active for some 15 years now, channeling an exploratory theme into cutting edge, non-conformist techno for the clubs but also for listening at home.
His previous album for Ostgut Ton, “Temporary Suspension”, re- instated that classic P.A.S sound and found the dextrous artist touring even more with this tougher, purist techno aesthetic.
And yet again Slater maintains his prolific output with the announcement of “The Messenger”. In his own words it's a project that stays very true and honest to the Planetary Assault Systems goal: a journey of discovery, to create new sounds which are not otherwise present in club music at this time.
From the album's beautiful introduction track “Railer (Further Exploration)”, which floats through the bubbling ether before leading into the mysterious depths of “Beauty In The Fear”, it is clear that Slater's role as sound explorer and adventurer has been dutifully fulfilled.
With the sense of timing that can only be expected from such an experienced DJ and musician, we are led through a series of stand out tracks, where no one feels less pure, yet each has their own voice.
Indeed there's a strong club element present here - Slater play-tested all the tracks and employed a careful editing process to make sure they all fit the description. Highly playable works of club-intended sound art, early heavy moments like “Bell Blocker” or the playful “Wriss” give way to even more severe messages as “Kray Squid” pulses onto the radar with magnetic energy.
The drum barrage of “Rip The Cut” speaks directly to the dancefloor, perhaps the most rhythmically intense moment of the album, which is not to be put lightly as the rolling, filtering tones of “Cold Bolster” and “Black Tea” urge us further into perfectly frenetic moments.

Fresh off of his re-activation of the seminal “Planetary Funk” series, Luke Slater delivers another new 12” with all of the purposeful intensity and sonic clarity to be expected from his celebrated Planetary Assault Systems alias. Pairing both an original mix and a spirited re-working by Josh Wink, “Kat” is a winning synthesis of all the elements that make P.A.S. such a continually relevant player in the game of moving bodies and opening minds: it once again pushes beat-driven sound to disciplined extremes, but not without clearly detectable traces of humor and playfulness.

As vocal repetition of the track’s simplistic and suggestive title is run through a maze of filters, pitch-shifts and delays, an equally busy set of tubular bass figures mirrors this approach and meshes with the insistent rhythm. Carefully inserted hard stops, crafty fading of sound from background to foreground, and unexpected breakdowns give the track a kind of restless feel that ensures its success as a peak hour selection, or as a reliable companion on inner-city underground transit journeys.

While the original mix on the b-side begins in a more subdued fashion, it isn’t lacking at all in concentrated energy. As is the case with so many other P.A.S. classics, this mix relies on geometrical sound sequences that slowly approach from a distance before they completely overtake the listener. Elements like static crackling are wielded here like active parts of the conversation rather than as atmospheric wallpaper, and the beat itself hits with a mixture of force and subtlety, with anxious drum hits doubling up on one another and regularly giving rise to new patterns.

“Kat” is the kind of record that gives Planetary Assault Systems fans both what they want, and what they didn’t expect: it steers away from easy techno conventions but never abandons that genre’s physicality and infectiousness.
