Calm, raw, kind of gloomy. Twisted, wishful, acidic and just about as pure as it gets. You’ve entered the cave and those melodic rain droplets bump against your balding head. Your sideburns are vibrating as Electric Relaxation fuzzes with your brain. It’s always nice to open a box not knowing what’s inside, right? Fede Lng gifts our Funktion Ones with a well-paced, strangely infused, perfectly sampled EP opener that makes you shift from an uncomfortable sleeping position into one that sinks right into your feathery pillows and warm, shady, eccentric late-night-rave dreams. Now, wipe the raindrops off your forehead, grab your lighter and hit it.
Right. You’re in the bathroom that’s covered with strange graffiti-like “art”. Sturdy beats hitting your body fat. ‘What is this sound that’s so deeply penetrating?’ I see. The right questions are being asked. Are you still holding your lighter? ‘That’s how I would describe it’. Who’s voice is this? Why is it so vibrant? Looking in the mirror you feel urged to run to the floor, stand amid the foamy steam coming from pointy objects leaning against the walls. As the smoke thumps into your lungs you’re struck with this incredibly powerful drop that is so electric you can hear the inner urge to just Shut’em Down, leave the place and be at ease with what you just heard. ‘Never heard anything like it before.’ Fuck yes!
Just as you’re leaving the club this bouncer-looking dude, who’s kind of shady to be honest, approaches you and whispers: ‘wanna join the afterparty, fam?’ You’re hesitant. Who is this guy? Whatever. Ignore the Duality of emotions, get over it and go with the flow. ‘I’ll join’, you say. The tunnel is long, the walls really dark. As you slide into the shadows of the late morning hours, you can hear ‘over you, over you’ repeatedly grow louder as the gates of the infamous afterparty open. The room is decorated in astral-like LCD lights, and there are like seven people hanging around the booth. Everyone else has their eyes closed, cocktail in hand, pants sagging low with one jug of coffee on the bar. Deejay Astral’s input in this club night is insane. The bass-line, the synths, the vocals; they linger. Just as your alter ego lingers in the hours that surpass anyone’s bedtime. Don’t stop, man.
There’s so much energy now. Ready for the next party. Was this a genuine experience, or a fleeting encounter with this guru figure that offers the so-called Metaphysical Therapy? Astral knows. Still got that light? The pipe is pretty packed now, and your dancing shoes are tied well enough to handle another night of glistening madness. Switch on the pirate radio, get the right frequency, forget the engineer and just enjoy the sounds of the top man. The keys and the drops, paired with the other innovations created in the velour studio are a donation to all those that wilfully jumped into this pool of the future.

Imagine that part of many house tracks after the climax, with its intensity and purpose. Now imagine taking that part out of the song, re-building it with lots of rough, lo-fi sounds and then stretching it all out for more than six minutes, and you’ve got something like Stratosphere, the first track of E Davd’s upcoming EP on X-Kalay. In direct follow-up to Melburnian Lou Karsh’s Ataraxia, the London-based label is reaching down under again, to Sydney, for a few rhythmic cuts from a man whose tracks we’ve premiered before on Blaq numbers.

Definitely deserving of wider recognition, E Davd was one of the four artists to contribute to X-Kalay’s inaugural Various Artists release for XK010. And now he's come back strong for his first solo record on the label, set for a May 18 release, further bolstering its impressive discography. Bar the intro and a brief interlude around halfway, the A1 (and our premiere) drives forcefully and with real musical clarity. There’s not much ambiguous or particularly complex about it: a crunching open hi-hat, looped acid bassline, three-chord progression and some chopped vocals allow the track to exceed the sum of its parts. As much as we like our premiere, our favourites are on the B-side. Certainly the most adventurous, Zero G (B2) and Heartbeat Hyperdrive (B3) provide some interesting dynamism to this EP with their respective breakbeat and rave nods.

Defora Records presents “Take Your Time” the new EP by label founder Manipolato (aka Latino Pellegrini). One year has passed from his last release on the label and now, our main man is back with a bunch of new tracks full of good summer vibes. The title track is a tribute to Manipolato’s underground vocal house background when he was living in New York City lower east side as an active member of the local club scene. Featuring amazing vocals from a well-known house legend (can you guess who?) make sure to prepare your dancing shoes for a soulful journey back in time. The EP also features the Afro House influenced remix by DJ Thor and 2 more original tracks. Always Good Vibes with a Hard Twist!


MANIPOLATO (aka Latino Pellegrini) is an Italian DJ/Producer, musician, filmmaker and the founder of Defora Records. Active as a DJ since the late 90's in the New York scene, Manipolato's first EP “Medications” was released on vinyl in 2003 by Red Menace Records, with a dope remix by Gus Gus. Both behind the decks and in the studio, Manipolato delivers a unique blend of Techno, Deep & Tech House and Old School Grooves. His discography is also filled with several collaborations and remixes for artists such as Elisa, Anna Cavazos, Ricky Leo and Sound Shapes. In 2015 he founded his own label Defora Records with the main goal to create a growing family of talented artists from around the globe and to release only quality music for the dance-floor. Currently based in Italy, he’s an active figure in the local underground scene, as he continues to produce and to perform his music in clubs worldwide.
