Part of the future never dies. And as owner of the long-running Cultivated Electronics label, Phil Bolland's been making sure that the electro sound pioneered in the early-80's by Ryuichi Sakamoto and Afrika Bambaataa (among others) remains the forward-thinking dancefloor ammunition it always has been.

Since starting the label in 2007 (though he's been releasing music on other imprints since 2003), Bolland's dedication to the genre has been unwavering. Electro has fallen in and out of fashion over the years, but it seems to be enjoying another purple patch of late. Recent music from stalwarts such as DJ Stingray and The Exaltics and newcomers like Shanti Celeste prove it's a style that continues to find favour with dancefloors over 30 years since its inception.

This exclusive mix from Sync 24 hammers the point home - featuring contemporary material from the likes of Marco Bernardi, J.T.C. and Truss as well as a number of unreleased and forthcoming tracks, it's a heady, focused ride from start to finish that proves electro continues to remain the potent force it always has. "The sound of CPU reflects Sheffield's musical heritage, forged with that of Detroit Techno and Braindance (Rephlex et al.) But there's a strong syncopated beat influence over the curation which has dominated, hence CPU being known and lauded as an electro imprint.

Another thing you will notice about CPU is the stark and brutal sleeve designs. Each sleeve has an 8-bit binary* catalogue number** on the front centred in an Alien-esque logo, the number being the only thing that visually distinguishes each release.

This mix contains upcoming releases, demos and unreleased tracks on CPU and its sub-label Computer Club, a more experimental branch which also doubles as a club night in Sheffield. I think the mix gives a clear representation of the label and its direction. It was an absolute pleasure to do as I rediscovered some old favourites during the process. I hope you enjoy it and check out the label sometime.

One reason why ambient-techno of the early '90s ambient/techno releases stands out as having a strong sense of the quirkily creepy in its own particular way, is the way it uses contrasting samples of a child quaveringly saying, "We had a dream last night," followed by a rougher sample saying, "We had the same dream," giving a track like the Third planet an unsettling feeling. 

Weather it uses a good dancefloor sharpness to it even as or sneaky odd drones and samples through the mix, extraterrestrial themed, or SF samples from 2001, Blade runner, DJing this music will mostly, though, things continue on a deliciously unnerving pace throughout, gentle enough to go down easy but still just off enough to ensure you can't call this new age folderol for the rave generation.
