FACT mix 447 - Forest Swords (Jun '14)

Brokenchord is the moniker for Lithuanian electronic producer Ernestas Kausylas. He has released singles and albums on Bristol based Black Acre Records, and contributed a short exclusive mix for Radio One's Mary Anne Hobbs. He received acclaim for his remix of Radiohead's 'Give Up The Ghost' and has been included in the band's Dead Air Space blog Office Chart.

This is the first and only mix created during the one session. I didn't have too much of a plan going into it, but I can honestly say it ended up coming directly from the heart.

Alongside some of the music I’ve been listening to lately, there are also a couple of special throwbacks included in this mix such as Ewan Pearson’s take on Foals’ Olympic Airways, which I used to rinse at house parties when I was an indie kid.

I’ve seen Foals perform about eight times and they were the band who guided my taste from indie rock to electronic music. I still rate them as one of the best live acts in the world. 

The second one is Tom Middleton’s re-model of the classic Orbital track Halcyon, which I brought in the new year with during a DJ set at a memorable rooftop party with my closest friends in 2016.

Jamie Tiller, a favourite DJ of mine who tragically passed away recently, also closed his incredible three hour set in Sydney late last year with the original version. It was a beautiful moment I’ll never forget. Thanks for the good times Jamie, you will be missed!

Mark Ernestus Meets BBC

Yoric Spick is the personality behind Jaquarius, the ever cheerful French acid rave kid to look out for. He's incredibly passionate and he has a limitless obsession with analogue machines, old science fiction movies and quirky socks.   Last Saturday he was the international guest at the amazing Rave Alert concept in Gent.  This was the ideal chance to invite him for a one hour MoustacheMusic Radio session on Sunday.  

We always say to think out of the box whenever artists ask us what we would like to hear.  Well, this one hour recording is the result of his interpreation.  Expect a one hour IDM, braindance mix like a whirlwind with clear pinches of acid from the 303-box and carefully chosen samples from his favourite old sci-fi movies.

This is a masterpiece, made with passion, for passionate people.

We welcome Chris Carter from Throbbing Gristle in our 25th Anniversary slot, an influential group for Jon More from Coldcut and in his own words;

"Its 1977 I was 20 & at art college in High Wycombe, 1976 had been a good year….the Sex Pistols had gate crashed our end of year party & The Clash played at the Student Union bar…  The Nags Head Pub had given me an education in all things punk, then Throbbing Gristle played and everything changed. (See a less than complementary review from the local paper on the Solid Steel Facebook page http://on.fb.me/XDa11m )

I could not understand why everyone got so upset…. After this initiation i started going up to London to buy records from Rough Trade…I had to wait until November & then as I walked into the shop - the last moments of Second Annual Report were playing… I think it was Maggot Death-recorded live in Brighton… pretty much a recording of the local dj insulting the band after they have left the stage… i bought the album, wrote about them for Stabmental Fanzine, put on a gig on at Goldsmiths College… went to about 12 of TG's gigs all over the country.. bought all the records… still have the flyers… a fan.
Throbbing Gristle was such an influence from the Industrial Records hyper branding to the sonic assault of their live shows… Still the deepest bass I have ever felt was at a TG's gig at Centro Iberico in London.. 

So we at Solid Steel are proud to have a mix from Chris Carter founder member of Throbbing Gristle and member of Chris & Cosi undoubtedly a major influence on todays electronic music..."
