Chicago Footwork legend DJ MANNY is back on Moveltraxx with a new EP, 1 year after his classic "Feet Start Dancing" EP and a few months after his Planet Mu LP. On this new record, the Teklife mainstay explores Jungle, Ghetto House and Dancehall influences, flawlessly incorporating those in his always boundaries-pushing Juke and Footwork formula. EP opener "Feel The Love" pays homage to Stardust's French Touch classic "Music Sound Better With You" while "Get Freaky" gives you a taste of what a 2024 Dance Mania record would probably sound like. Eponymous track "Escape Reality" manages to be both meditative and banging and "Reggae My Way" is probably the most unique Footwork record you have heard in ages. Street Bangers Factory classic "Go Down" closes the EP as a bonus track. Recently named by Mixmag "Artist That Made 2023", it's clear that Manny has no intention to slow things down in 2024.

It’s been a minute, but Sneaker Social Club is gassed to facilitate the return of the mighty House Of Black Lanterns, locking in for the dankest 2-step flex in a sincere ode to pirate radio culture. Dylan Richards has always displayed an affinity for low-end pressure threaded through his versatile HOBL output on Houndstooth and his prior work as King Cannibal, but he’s never dialled in to UKG with this much focus before.
 
The A side comes on strong with ‘Back To Back Special’, a dark garage creeper with negative space so vast it becomes all consuming — all the better for the ample MC toasting and spring reverb FX splashes to ping out around the skeletal, hard-knocking swing and snarling bass. ‘Out To The Private Number’ maintains the theme, flipping soulful UKG tropes into an ice-cold update for these malevolent times. 
 
On the flip, Richards pushes the formula further out with ‘Slew’, which deploys hardcore-minded bass hooks in a devilishly dissected rhythmic framework and amps up the yard intensity on the MC source material to create a deadly intersection of garage, rave and dancehall. ‘Summon Like’ dials up the eeriness and lets the growl of the bass take centre stage in a potent, unnervingly minimalist dance wrecker that simply confirms the crystal clear vision Richards is pursuing on this record. 
 
It’s a devout love letter to the edgiest of garage’s golden era without being limited to a simple genre study. Instead, a broad church of soundsystem exaltation gets expressed through the Richards’ elevated production vocabulary, capturing the shockout, mind-blowing spirit of the most trailblazing plates when they first got dropped on an unsuspecting crowd.

After numerous contributions to V/A, Mambo Kahn is coming back to Cluster Traxx to release his long awaited solo debut EP “Stronghold”, exploring his repertory, from club-oriented 2-step tools to emotional rave anthems.

‘Bounce and Clash’, the first track of the EP, is a revisited version of one of the artist’s earliest productions. Mambo Kahn turned the original progressive, atmospheric tune into a 2-step club-ready edit, mirroring his new musical aspirations, years later.

The eponymous track ‘Stronghold’ reflects a new direction for Mambo Kahn, fusing the ghetto-electro sonorities of previously released ‘Raskit Boi’, with almost trance-inspired harmonies.

‘Cloudy Allegro’ is a no-nonsense UK rave piece, inspired by rave nostalgia and more modern acts such as Denham Audio, Breaka and BABii. The track features layered drum breakbeats, roaring bass lines, emotional rave chords and a live-tweaked synth arpeggio to drive the euphoria.

‘Daydream’ is all about skipping drum patterns and a warm subline reminiscent of early dubstep tunes. Harmonic elements, aquatic sound effects and distant vocal samples contribute to the comforting atmosphere of the piece, closing the EP in a laid back manner.

PREMIERE: Mambo Kahn - Daydream [Cluster Traxx]

On ACEN058, label boss DJ Pitch teams up with Berlin-based artist MLE to put together an EP of energetic, stripped-down dancefloor cuts. MLE, Rhythm Section affiliate and Refuge Worldwide resident, presents her first released productions; DJ Pitch puts out his first offerings on the label since 2022’s Scared.

First up on the record is the energetic Proto Windmill. Kicking off in a relentlessly jacking house groove, a blissful sample gently enters the fray. A lively vocal sample, reminiscent of UK funky MCs, encourages the dancers whilst MLE and Pitch masterfully switch between dreamy strings and punchy percussive sections.

Next up is Drum Trak 101. Playful, satisfyingly off-kilter drums set the pace, punctuated by oddball vocal samples and rallying whistles. Whilst the percussion gets a thorough workout, this drum track has an emotional edge to it, with soaring strings and a bouncy, uplifting chord progression.

Wicked Cool Mega Safe ramps things up into a high-intensity groove. Whilst stripping things down to percussive basics, the track remains endlessly compelling, with a forceful four-to-the-floor clap pattern surrounded by ecstatic snare rolls, percussive grunts and syncopated tom hits.

Closing the record in fine style is Post Club Post Step. An acidic synth line rolls underneath rigid four-to-the-flour drums, whilst a bouncy sub bass jumps between the beats. A dubbed-out vocal sample brings an air of urgency to the track, introducing an earworm synth melody that runs above the track’s energetic tech house groove.

These three productions beautifully display Kid Kun´s personal take on modern, UK schooled techno hybridity. “Creep” introduces the listener to an industrial soundscape, spiced by eerie vocal chops. It’s undeniably dark, but powerfully driving energy continues to evolve with “Recharge” whose grimy claps fuse with thundering basslines. “Saturn”, finally, takes Kid Kuns sound to the faster paced realms where it hypnotically nods at DnB infused steppers. To round off the EP in style, Berlin based Cocktail Party Effect takes on “Creep” and transforms it into the ultimate uptempo roller. All through, a powerful display of high-end dancefloor-tools. Lock on for a legit excursion into 140 realness as Sneaker Social Club welcomes Silas into the fold. The breakthrough Oxford beatsmith has been on the bubble-up for a minute, facing off with the likes of Trends and Boylan on Mean Streets, remixing PRAGA and throwing down for repeat appearances on Rinse and elsewhere.

The sound Silas pushes on the ‘Wot’ EP - his debut solo 12” no less - is steeped in the original dank pressure of OG grime and dubstep, where moodiness and minimalism create the perfect storm for all-consuming soundsystem immersion. There’s a wavey swing to ‘Know Yourself’ which contrasts with the strict, claustrophobic drive of ‘Wot’. ‘Ubuntu’ on the flip teases an evocative sound world just past the edge of the mix, but manages to hold down the stripped back approach on a skippy 4/4 rhythm which nudges garage into a kind of tech-house-funky amalgamation. ‘Make It Happen’ offers yet another subtle slant on Silas’ style, crooked and gritty but still executed with
an unrelenting, austere focus.
