Months of planning had gone into the event; every single element has been carefully thought through and fulfilled with the utmost care. There was a lot riding on this, her reputation was firmly on the line. She'd not been quiet about how successful it would be, in fact she'd proudly promised the best party the city had ever seen. There was no room for mistakes; she had to make a splash...

Over the last year South London's Sticky Tapes project have notched up five cassette mixes, from Violet and ELLES, Om Unit, CC:Disco. Asquith and Criminal, raising an incredible £1,500 for five different charities. As a celebration of reaching their first anniversary, founder Theo Giles is taking things up a level with a compilation that features 11 original cuts from some of his favourite producers over the last year. Comprised of music from the likes of Jossy Mitsu, LUXE, Black Cadmium, Cyphon and Stones Taro, the release moves through different strains of electronic music, from garage to breaks and electronica to downtempo.

It wouldn't be a proper Sticky Tapes release if it didn't come complete with a mixed version of the selections across the comp. As an accompaniment, Theo has called on London-based DJ and Balamii resident Amaliah to weave the tracks together, available exclusively on cassette. All profits from the compilation and the cassette mix will be donated to Samaritans.

About Camino de Cintura

Two EPs of 5 tracks each that function as the two facets of the same work, and that cover the different bifurcations in the production process of the album, one with calmer yet catchy sounds and the other more nocturnal and frenetic.

‘The process was paused several times for tours, and each time we picked up the musical mood evolved, so there are different moods and genres, representing different interests and musical pursuits. The first tracks are very much influenced by the music I like to listen to, and the last ones by what I like to play in a club’ - says Don Plok regarding the two volumes in which the album is presented.

The tracks on Vol. 1 go through different stages, such as tranquillity, creativity, enthusiasm, eclecticism, mystery, while those on Vol. 2 go through other emotions, such as euphoria, wildness, stimulation, excitement and madness.

Camino de cintura, is the route that borders the city of Buenos Aires. It represents the diversity of the peripheries, as well as the proximity and connection between apparently distant points. The album is a journey along the creative route of the multifaceted Argentinean producer, in two instalments, which offer that variable vision of a chameleon-like artist who knows how to adapt to the different realities of his day-to-day life as a DJ, producer and communicator of musical language through the soundsystem culture and raver ‘bonaerense’.

‘Camino de Cintura is a road close to my house, it crosses the entire Buenos Aires suburbs but from the depths of the city. The wide route represents the diversity that can be found on this road, telling a story that pays homage to the different types of suburbs and imaginaries’ - says Pablo Carpignano aka Don Plok.

The second release will be available on platforms on Friday 14 June, and consists of 5 tracks as well and includes collaborations with more guest artists. It features a higher BPM sound, closer to dancefloor.

The album was artistically produced together with Manuel Schaller (Sexteto Irreal, Axel Krygier, Orquesta Hypnofón, Dick el Demasiado, Avant Press) in his Buenos Aires studio Oídos Contentos.

Astrophonica proudly presents “Philip D Kick – Pathways” and we’ll start by passing you straight over to Label boss Fracture...

“This is really a special record for Astrophonica. It could be argued that Jim Coles aka Om Unit’s Philip D Kick alias spawned an entire movement which dictated the sound of future. The three Philip D Kick ‘Footwork Jungle’ EPs released in 2011 saw Jim take classic Jungle anthems and footwork them. At the time, this was mind-blowing, I’d never heard anything like it. Even though I had been checking for Footwork and of course, have a history and love for Jungle. These edits spawned a generation of younger producers and revitalised older producers like myself. It also bought Jim and I together as friends and later on collaborators. So it is with great pleasure and genuine excitement that I present to you Philip D Kick’s first original material – Pathways.”

"I decided once I was done with my Om Unit ‘Self' project that I wanted to have some real fun with breaks again, and something drew me back to working at 160bpm, I wanted to make some more fun light-hearted stuff, and so I felt like returning to the Philip project would be a nice way of not only re-visiting something that was such a vibe back in the day but also now that all the fuss around so called 'jungle footwork' as a 'thing' has died down."

Pathways opens with ‘In Formation’ which sets off with familiar breaks before descending into uncharted Acid Footwork Jungle territory. ‘Work That’ traces the 4/4 UK hardcore lineage to plot a new course for the dance floor. ’Drown’ draws energy from drum-funk to discover an ethereal breakdown that leads to a sound killing Amen finale. Two worlds collide on the same course in ’Vibe Off’ with Chicago based Footwork pioneer DJ Spinn claiming he’s vibing off the beat and honestly, who can blame him? ’For Real’ is a fitting ending to Pathways. A lights out and headphones on journey from moody drum machine rhythms to euphoric synth lines.

Pathways is released 31st May 2018 on Limited Edition 12” & Digital with Limited Edition A3 Risograph prints, and Limited Edition Tshirts with DTG oversize prints on US-Import Tees. As always big shout Utile Creative (and Philip D Kick’s Reebok Classics) for the artwork.
