The latest release from Clubsonica Records finds the label showcasing the 2022 edition of its MMW Sampler. Long a testing ground for some of the underground's freshest new music, Miami Music Week sees artists, DJs, labels and industry brands travelling to the long-standing event, searching for what will be the spring and summer seasons biggest records. The global pandemic cancelled the event's previous two years but now with the world opening back up, the 2022 installment moves forward with great anticipation. Pre-covid 19, the MMW Sampler was a staple in Clubsonica's release schedule, and now makes a triumphant return with exciting new music from (in order of appearance): Alex Bessofen and Pablo Arbelaez, Andre Moret and NAHS, Emegepe, Mir Omar and Ric Niels.

Opening the release are Alex Bessofen and Pablo Arbelaez. Also finding favour with world class DJ Hernan Cattaneo, Alex and Pablo continue on an upwards trajectory with 'Mezcal'. Aimed squarely at a peak time dance floor, the duo marries electric rhythms and striking percussion with driving beats and pulsating grooves. A stunning array of effects delights across the first act, sweeping in and out of the stereo-field as crunchy arps add texture and momentum leading into the second of two breaks. Rising modulation continues to elevate mood as the interlude builds to a sonic sizzle, before giving way to a vortex of noise as the groove drops for a thumping finale.

Selection two finds Andre Moret alongside NAHS. Now, joining forces for the first time, Clubsonica serves as the perfect landing spot for the duo's collaboration entitled 'Brava'. Deep and fluid throughout, the duo's sleek designs are mysterious yet hopeful, tactfully merging for a momentous mindset-style groover. Looking to bring greater emotional depth, the main break adds colour through arpeggiated phrasing and cinematic overlays, gently building anticipation onwards to a glowing apex and purring final movement.

Next up is Emegepe. Presenting his first project of 2022, Emegepe now makes his Clubsonica debut with 'Multicoloured Puff'. Played out over eight minutes, its tightly-knit groove and hypnotic rhythms set the foundation for an evolving atmospheric narrative. Ghostly wails and timeless chord stabs come in waves across the first act, playing off layers of driving percussion, while sweeping effects carry into the main break. Stripping down to a cavernous ambience, the interlude builds anticipation through striking overlays and colourful arps, before giving way to a stripped-down drop and intoxicating finale.

The sampler's lone remix is provided by Mir Omar. Now with the demand for new material at an all-time high, Mir makes his Clubsonica debut with a gorgeous rendition of 'Induction' by Mental Order and Tim Othy. Opting for a bigger, more peak-time approach, the American artist focuses on a strong rhythmic narrative, with layers of hip-swinging percussion and buoyant tonal themes fueling its infectious drive. Landing in a timely fashion, the main break resonates with great strength, juxtaposing shape-shifting atmospheres over warm sub bass, onwards to a driving finale.

The release concludes in fine style with Ric Niels. Ric returns to round out the MMW Sampler with 'Who Knows'. Well in line with the previous selections, its striking beats and free flowing, energetic style conjures up colourful clubland images. A marriage of trippy effects and driving percussion blankets a tight, compact groove, perfectly setting the stage for a cascading lead theme. The main break is set to delight dance floors with its whimsical charm and mesmerizing build, the latter of which smoothly shifts energy into a chunky, percussive finale. Mature and well composed, it rounds out an excellent 2022 edition of Clubsonica's MMW Sampler, one where a combination of new and veteran talent come together for several magical moments.

Presenting their second release of the year, Antrim’s Or Two Strangers welcomes Sebastian Sellares back to the label for a new EP. The Cordoba resident has been one of the imprints core artists since first appearing in 2019, with five original productions released over the course of a prolific sixteen month stretch. UK behemoth Anjunadeep, Cid Inc’s Replug Records, GMJ and Matter's Meanwhile and US powerhouse Proton Music have also served as landing spots for the Argentine's mesmerizing productions, while progressive music tastemakers Hernan Cattaneo and Nick Warren continue to champion his sound. With the year being highlighted by the recently released Replug vehicle ‘Sky Above’, a joint EP project produced alongside fellow countryman Ezequiel Arias, Sebastian now returns to Or Two Strangers with a three track showcase entitled ‘Blizzard’.

EP opener and title selection ‘Blizzard’ finds Sebastian operating at the peak of his creative powers. Fuelled by tough driving beats and layers of hypnotic percussion; it’s Sebastian’s stirring melodies which ultimately shape the piece into a memorable dance floor slam. Colourful cascades emerge leading into the main break, sitting in an emotional headspace and bringing with them trails of balmy atmospherics and effervescent effects, before eventually breaking off into a drop of rebounding rhythms and heartwarming chord changes.

Selection two ‘Elements of Nature’ lands with an equally impressive display of craftsmanship. Sebastian re-affirms his ability to tip a late-night dance floor over the edge, with wobbly grooves and hip-swinging percussion laying the foundation for misty atmospheres and smoky instrumentation. Sitting comfortably in an ethereal yet thought provoking space, thumping beats rise out of a soulful strum-led break into an ever-evolving, free form finale.

The EP’s final selection ‘Hypnotica’ finds Sebastian continuing to diversify his portfolio with a whimsical creation that’s nicely dialled for the sunrise hours. Deeper in design and highly stylized in delivery, its beautifully contoured, funk-fuelled groove sets the course for incandescent melodies and otherworldly harmonics to create a panoramic musical skyline. Often celebrated for his ability to create emotional themes, Sebastian has ventured further with the ‘Blizzard’ collection, into a time of true innovation, traversing a multitude of realms and dimensions within the progressive spectrum, while excelling throughout.

Following the success of August 2021’s debut compilation series, and a first volume featuring six original tracks from a stellar cast of international talent, GMJ & Matter now return with a thoroughbred 10-track sequel in “Meanwhile Excursions, Vol. 2”.

Presenting a global dance party with artists from across the continents, from North and South America to Europe, Australasia and Asia, the second instalment of the “Meanwhile Excursions” series combines an array of established talent with up-and-coming nubreed artists who shine a bright light on the progressive house genre.

Opening with the deep bass groove of “Negev”, Colombian star, Golan Zocher, and label head-honcho, GMJ, blend their talent with a delicate ambience that shimmers across its 8-minute time fame with textured pads and flowing soundscape. Mango Alley favourite, Forty Cats continues with the smooth sounds of “Mutualism” as hypnotic rhythms and bass groove propel things forwards, while Andrés Moris creates club-friendly force via “Owen’s Dream”. Full of emotive chords progressions and twinkling arpeggios, a pulsating bassline makes for a beautifully assured debut.

Redolent in intricate percussive groove and juxtaposed with sumptuous synth arrangement, Tonaco’s “Setentrional” is a rhythmic tour de force that only pauses for breath at the beatless breakdown, while Dowden’s first of two offerings is a typically impressive offering with “Halstatt” glittering via earworm motif that melds with freeform counterpoint sequence as it evolves through a flurry of white-noise fills and mesmerising presence.

A slow-burning jewel that combines strong rhythmic force with running bassline presence, “Retro” finds Ivan Aliaga showcasing an evolving melodic tapestry that waxes and wanes with ease, while “Misanthropy” is another rhythm-fuelled affair that demonstrates why NOIYSE PROJECT is a name currently on the lips of the progressive cognoscenti with his club-friendly groove and ear for melodic emotion. Moving forwards, the low-slung groove of EMPHI’s “The Box” helps to generate a brooding wall of sound that builds in tension-filled phases that rise and fall in ever-evolving synth work and stereo-panned white-noise effects.

The second track from Dowden see him join forces with Meanwhile’s other co-founder as the immaculate production credentials of Matter see beautiful piano phrases glitter across “York”, fully exposed at the mid-point where reverb-drenched and delay-soaked chords vie for space with a dynamic rhythmic backdrop and ticking hi-hat percussion. Ending as it starts, smooth melodic patterns flow from the fingertips of Gorkiz and Distro in cascading layers of dreamy sonic passages that create a coruscating mosaic of sound atop the blistering rhythmic energy of “Staring at the Sun”.

A 10-track trip through the sound of modern progressive house, “Meanwhile Excursions, Vol. 2” is a journey to remember.

5. Dowden - Hallstatt (Original Mix)

Both huge names in the progressive house genre, Alex O’Rion & Ezequiel Arias join forces for a debut on Meanwhile as the GMJ & Matter led imprint celebrates its 34th release with “Solis”. Two further solo tracks from Alex O’Rion complete the musical picture.

An artist at the centre of the underground dance scene for almost 20 years and with over 400 production credits to his name, Alex O’Rion has been a Meanwhile regular, most notably with his landmark four-track “Echium” EP in May 2021. A trio of remixes for Rich Curtis and GMJ & Matter themselves bookend a powerful portfolio on the label. Similarly, Ezequiel Arias has found himself at the vanguard of the modern progressive house movement with his standout work for a host of blue-chip imprints including Anjunadeep, Sudbeat Music and Nick Warren’s The Soundgarden. Now making his Meanwhile debut, Arias joins forces with Alex O’Rion as the duo showcase “Solis”.

The headline track is thus a powerful reminder of the combined talent of the Dutch and Argentinean pairing as “Solis” powers forward with chest-thumping kick and sublime bassline groove. Clave percussive flourishes add a summery vibe to proceedings as a filtered synth line gradually comes to the fore, mirroring the bassline foundation. Gently evolving across the 6-minute piece, a free-flowing synth line wends its way across the melodic collage while a beatless breakdown creates the perfect opportunity for a variation in the cadenced chord progression. Hitting its stride once more in the second half, “Solis” is a timely reminder of the silky-smooth skills and unrivalled craftsmanship of the talented duo.

“Pluvia” sees Alex O’Rion back on solo duties as a chunky beat and swung offbeat hi-hats create the perfect environment for crackling effects and pitched synths to flow in sparkling patterns against a backdrop of white-noise risers. Evolving with ease, subtle melodies play off each other in fluid rivulets of sound. Metallic wind chimes echo in random patterns as a smorgasbord of sound effects give the sonic impression of falling rain in a sparking track.

The final piece finds “Sericum” proving an apposite title as a smooth-roasted bass groove sits below deep kick and cavernous sub-bass pattern. A shuffling hi-hat top line provides subtle urgency as a mellifluous synth line flows like honey as the track reaches its mid-point. A reverb-soaked lead line adds harmonic variation as a vibrant breakdown creates the perfect moment of reflection. The rhythmic melange once again hits its mark again in the second half, accompanied by the array of opulent melodic elements introduced earlier in the piece.

“Through “Solis”, Alex O’Rion and Ezequiel Arias burn brightly in a stunning array of iridescent aural colour.
