Following the success of August 2021’s debut compilation series, and a first volume featuring six original tracks from a stellar cast of international talent, GMJ & Matter now return with a thoroughbred 10-track sequel in “Meanwhile Excursions, Vol. 2”.

Presenting a global dance party with artists from across the continents, from North and South America to Europe, Australasia and Asia, the second instalment of the “Meanwhile Excursions” series combines an array of established talent with up-and-coming nubreed artists who shine a bright light on the progressive house genre.

Opening with the deep bass groove of “Negev”, Colombian star, Golan Zocher, and label head-honcho, GMJ, blend their talent with a delicate ambience that shimmers across its 8-minute time fame with textured pads and flowing soundscape. Mango Alley favourite, Forty Cats continues with the smooth sounds of “Mutualism” as hypnotic rhythms and bass groove propel things forwards, while Andrés Moris creates club-friendly force via “Owen’s Dream”. Full of emotive chords progressions and twinkling arpeggios, a pulsating bassline makes for a beautifully assured debut.

Redolent in intricate percussive groove and juxtaposed with sumptuous synth arrangement, Tonaco’s “Setentrional” is a rhythmic tour de force that only pauses for breath at the beatless breakdown, while Dowden’s first of two offerings is a typically impressive offering with “Halstatt” glittering via earworm motif that melds with freeform counterpoint sequence as it evolves through a flurry of white-noise fills and mesmerising presence.

A slow-burning jewel that combines strong rhythmic force with running bassline presence, “Retro” finds Ivan Aliaga showcasing an evolving melodic tapestry that waxes and wanes with ease, while “Misanthropy” is another rhythm-fuelled affair that demonstrates why NOIYSE PROJECT is a name currently on the lips of the progressive cognoscenti with his club-friendly groove and ear for melodic emotion. Moving forwards, the low-slung groove of EMPHI’s “The Box” helps to generate a brooding wall of sound that builds in tension-filled phases that rise and fall in ever-evolving synth work and stereo-panned white-noise effects.

The second track from Dowden see him join forces with Meanwhile’s other co-founder as the immaculate production credentials of Matter see beautiful piano phrases glitter across “York”, fully exposed at the mid-point where reverb-drenched and delay-soaked chords vie for space with a dynamic rhythmic backdrop and ticking hi-hat percussion. Ending as it starts, smooth melodic patterns flow from the fingertips of Gorkiz and Distro in cascading layers of dreamy sonic passages that create a coruscating mosaic of sound atop the blistering rhythmic energy of “Staring at the Sun”.

A 10-track trip through the sound of modern progressive house, “Meanwhile Excursions, Vol. 2” is a journey to remember.

Weird Sounding Dude is a Bangalore-based music producer/DJ. Drawing his influences from the likes of James Holden, Extrawelt, and Nathan Flake. Weird Sounding Dude's trademark chuggy grooves, squelchy rhythms, and winding melodies are sure to satisfy his listeners but there are always a few surprises along the way.

Life is about evolving and as it happens with a lot of artists, only DJ’ing wasn’t enough for Weird Sounding Dude's musical odyssey, so he embarked on a journey to prove his worth as a self-taught music producer. In a very short span of time, Weird Sounding Dude became a regular on the charts of Beatport, and his music went onto gain continuous support from some of the top renowned artists such as Tony Mcguinness (from Above & Beyond), John Digweed, Hernan Cattaneo, Nick Warren, Guy Mantzur, Guy J, Nick Muir, Marsh, Armen Miran, Lost Desert, Cid Inc., Roy Rosenfeld, Khen and many more.

Weird Sounding Dude has always enjoyed a place in the underground dance music culture with performances at music festivals such as Sunburn, Satellite Beachside, R.E.S.E.T., La Foresta (Sri Lanka), Ctrl Alt Dance, Krank, Locals District, and played at some of the most celebrated venues across India such as Block 22, Tabularasa-The Bar, Phoniex, Kitty-Ko, PUMA Shuffle, Auro, Leather Bar, Tranqbar amidst many others. Weird Sounding Dude has had the privilege to share the decks with Nick Warren, Sebastien Leger, Mind Against, Jerome Isma-Ae, Stan Kolev, Jimpster, Vaal, Dauwd, BOg, Ziger, Navar, Kastis Torrau to name a few.

Weird Sounding Dude also hosts two radio shows. The first show is called 'sinetone' a monthly curated podcast that airs exclusively on Proton Radio every second Monday of the month. The second show is a very special bi-monthly curated podcast exclusive for Spotify and Apple Music called "Orbis". Weird Sounding Dude's guest-mixes have been featured on Deeper Sounds (Emirates In-Flight Entertainment), Melodic Deep (NL), Wildwood Podcast (Aus), Indivibe (Ind), The Park Hotels (Ind), Juicebox Radio (Ind), Distant Grooves - CME (Ind), So It Goes (USA), Bloop London Radio (UK), InstitutionYWG (Can), among many others.

Graziano Raffa returns to the label with a sensational three tracker - Masquerade EP.

Italian-born DJ, producer and Hernan's partner at Sudbeat, Graziano's roots are varied and interesting. From DJing the globe at venues such as Warung, Ministry of Sound and Thuishaven to releasing music for Tale & Tone, Plattenbank and Balance, he's as invaluable to us as he is to every party he's rocked. 

Opening with title track, 'Masquerade' powers into life with a carnival percussion underbelly supporting a gnarly Reese bass of such gargantuan proportions you'll only be able to play in outdoors! Marrying techy stylings with old skool progressive chunk, this track sits up perfectly for those pre-peak moments with consummate ease. 

Tough drums and a gritty bassline set 'Depolarized' apart. Growing over the opening bars, plucky chords breathe life into this early set chugger with bags of personality. Adding to it's musicality in the second half, this becomes one wild ride. Rounding out the EP, 'Marginal Value' goes a little deeper. Delicate synths juxtapose the tough, sparse drumwork with more than a touch of deep house crossover, before analogue synths take over midway and inject some late night funk.

Making his debut on the label, Clyve joins us with a classy double header. 

Hailing from the island of Malta, Clyve is no stranger to the sounds of electronic music. Breaking onto the scene at the turn of the century as a techno DJ, his tastes have matured in recent times towards a more melodic style. His productions have started to make waves on the scene since 2021, and he’s quickly found his footing with releases on Plattenbank, Mango Alley and more, proving that he’s an artist with a lot to say who lets the music do his talking.

His first EP on Sudbeat opens with ‘Lights at Night’. Deeply intricate and ultimately satisfying, much like his incendiary DJ sets, a considered build up and subtle melodics have made this a secret weapon in progressive house dance floors for many months already.

‘Mirage in a Cloud’ rallies to round out the pack with aplomb. Wildly danceable and more upbeat than its partner, the percussive underbelly acts as the perfect framework for orchestral lines, arps and vocal adlibs. A fitting end of the night rabble-rouser of a tune.
