Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart composed 23 string quartets. The six "Haydn" Quartets were written in Vienna during the years 1782 to 1785. They are dedicated to the composer Joseph Haydn, who is considered the creator of the modern string quartet. 

Haydn had recently completed his influential "Opus 33" set of quartets in 1781, the year that Mozart arrived in Vienna. Mozart studied Haydn's string quartets and began composing this set of six, which were published in 1785. 

During this time, Haydn and Mozart had become friends, and sometimes played quartets together in Mozart's apartment, with Mozart playing the viola, and Haydn playing violin.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's String Quartet No. 15 in D minor, K. 421/417b is the second of the Quartets dedicated to Haydn and the only one of the set in a minor key. 

Though undated in the autograph, it is believed to have been completed in 1783, while his wife Constanze Mozart was in labour with her first child Raimund. Constanze stated that the rising string figures in the second movement corresponded to her cries from the other room. 

It is in four movements:

Allegro moderato
Andante (F major)
Menuetto and Trio (the latter in D major). Allegretto
Allegretto ma non troppo

The first movement is characterized by a sharp contrast between the aperiodicity of the first subject group, characterized by Arnold Schoenberg as "prose-like," and the "wholly periodic" second subject group. In the Andante and the Minuet, "normal expectations of phraseology are confounded."

The main part of the Minuet is in minuet sonata form,[ while "the contrasting major-mode Trio ... is ... almost embarrassingly lightweight on its own ... [but] makes a wonderful foil to the darker character of the Minuet."The last movement is a set of variations.

Conservatory

The conservatory is part of the HKU, ‘Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht’ (Highschool for the Arts Utrecht). A complete education course is offered, from preparatory trainings to masters. A broad range of musical genres is offered. Classical, old and contemporary music, jazz and pop: everything is possible when you can choose from 40 different main subjects. Not only the techniques of making music are taught, attention is also paid to music theory and possible future jobs. That is why the conservatory organizes concerts and cultural events in Utrecht and the rest of the country on a regular basis.

The building in front of you was build in 1895 as the hospital of the brothers of Johannes de Deo in a neo-gothic style. From the architectural point of view the building is of great value as a typical example of urban development at the end of the 19th century. In 1971 Johannes de Deo found his new destination as a music school. De chapel is in large part still intact and is nowadays in use as a concert hall.

Some musicians who are internationally famous by now have started their education here at the conservatory in Utrecht. A good example is violinist Janine Jansen. Worldwide she is known and appreciated as a special and talented artist. She performed solo in famous concert halls en co-operated with worlds greatest orchestras like the New York philharmonic, the Londen Philharmonis and the Orchestre de Paris.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart - 1756–1791
is unarguably one of the most prolific and notable classical composers of all time. A child prodigy, Mozart was already proficient on the keyboard and violin by the age of five, composing remarkable works and performing before European royalty. At just 17 years old, he was engaged as a musician at the Salzburg court but, driven by ambition and a restless spirit, he embarked on travels to seek better opportunities.

In 1781, while visiting Vienna, Mozart’s dismissal from his Salzburg post marked a turning point in his life. He chose to remain in the imperial capital, where he gained widespread fame but struggled to achieve lasting financial stability. It was during his final years in Vienna that Mozart created many of his most celebrated works, including symphonies, concertos, operas, and the unfinished Requiem.

Over the course of his short but extraordinary life, Mozart composed more than 600 works, spanning symphonic, concertante, chamber, operatic, and choral genres. These masterpieces are recognized as pinnacles of Western art music and continue to inspire audiences and musicians alike. His enduring influence on classical music is profound, solidifying his legacy as one of history’s greatest composers.
