on 28th of October the by far outnumbered Hellenic Royal Army decided 2 take on it's fascist attackers thrashing them for consecutive 219 days, leading the 1st Victory & succesful counter-attack against the axis forces in wwII.  

The Hellenic forces took on fascist Italy when Prime Minister and General Ioanis Metaxa set an example to the world by saying "OXI" - No ! - to Mussolinis offer to turn Greece into a fascist satelite state of Italy.

Greece drove it´s Axis attackers 150 Kilometers into the Alvanian woods and helped the Albanians to free themselfves from occupieing Italy.
The Italians finally surrendered the whole Dodecannes and Kykladian Islands to Greece and ran over in 1943. In he end victorious Greece liberated huge parts of its territory when beating fascist Rumelia and Vulgaria as well.

During the German occupation the prussians teared down 500.000 anciant and bavarian erected marble buildings in Athens alone.


Even though Greece gave the western German Federal Republic a bailout and debt Reief in 1953 (! let that sink in !) , they never gave up their right on #warreperations , which the Germans fe paid to France for WWI till 2010.

therefor it is even more weird how insane the german conservative government acted during the so callled rating crisis, which was in fact started by Wolgang Schauble and his anti southern europen campaign of propaghnada against the Hellene. the germans drove the greeks interest rate to 15% by - unjustifiably and illlegally  - threaten to kick out Greece from the euro, when it declared to break the 3% criteria for a few years in 2009. which the Germans did themself for years btw (!).

Many wonder why Greeks do not celebrate the end of the WWII & the Nazi occupation and instead celebrate the begin of the war on 28. October 1940.


By the end of October 1944, the German troops had withdrawn from mainland Greece. The first British arrived in Athens on 14 October '44. 4 days later, the Greek government-in-exile returned to the capital. & another painful chapter in modern Greek history  opened slowly: the Civil War.

By 1944 world war II hero, ELAS leader and in fact liberator of central Greece,  Aris Velouchiotis had fallen in battle with british forces, taking 146 british occupiers into eternity when firing a hand grenade after having been encircled by British troops shouting "Freedom or Death".

A new government was formed. The immediate cause of the fighting was an EAM demonstration in Athens’ Syntagma Square on December the 3rd 1944, which turned violent when Greek police and British soldiers fired on the unarmed demonstrators.

a series of clashes took place between the communist EAM,  the KKE and others on 1 side and the Greek Government, some parts of the Royal Army, Police n some far-right organizations plus the British Army on the other side.
The chapter of history known as Dekemvriana ended with the defeat of EAM,, leading to its disarmament. with the Varkiza Agreement in 1945. This first defeat broke the power of EAM and was followed by a period of “White Terror” against the left, which contributed to the outbreak of the Greek Civil War in 1946 that ended in 1949.
“We are the only country that celebrate the begin of the war and not the end,” historian Tasoula Vervenioti said.
She has an explanation for this. “For ten years the country was in war and civil war. Which society can bear that? Update, the Civil War is a trauma, a taboo, the Greeks do not even touch, who much more to deal with…”
Greek prefer to celebrate the begin of the war than to be reminded of the Civil War,  should they celebrate its end.
