Grammy-Award Winning Artist Releases Lead-Single With An Assist From Jean Grae

You have heard Grammy Award-winning trumpet player Maurice “Mobetta” Brown before.  After all, he’s appeared on LP’s from Santigold, Ski Beatz, Prodigy, Talib Kweli, Cee-Lo, Diddy, Musiq Soulchild and countless others; but you heard his trumpet and not his voice. 

Think Louis Armstrong and his trumpet uploaded for the 21st century to a Hip-Hop beat, and you begin to understand who this young genius is. Maurice is a classically-trained Jazzman mentored and supported by the iconic Wynton Marsalis and the legendary Ramsey Lewis. But “Mobetta” is also a Hip-Hop head for life, and that journey on this planet rock literally parallels the history and evolution of rap. Little wonder that Maurice not only blows the roof off God’s sky with his horn, but he also spits lyrics the way Satchmo spit his own brand of vocalese back in the day. Yup, Mobetta is a horn-playing-rhyme-spraying-dancing machine that Jazz-Hip-Hop collaborators like Donald Byrd and Gang Starr’s Guru, or Ron Carter and A Tribe Called Quest fantasized about in the early 1990s. No need to cram to make that Jazz/Hip-Hop experiment happen in these times because Maurice Brown is the living and breathing embodiment of it all, a one-stop shop destined to be this era’s Quincy Jones. And then some!

Fresh off of winning his very first Grammy with Tedeschi Trucks Band for Best Blues Album of the year in 2012 (Maurice was the horn arranger for the 11-piece ensemble), Maurice is prepping his latest release, Maurice vs Mobetta, or, rather, Maurice’s azz side versus his Hip-Hop persona. Maurice vs Mobetta features appearances from Talib Kweli, Consequence, Prodigy, Jean Grae and production from Fyre Dept, DJ Scratch and Maurice himself and its a mere sampling of what’s in-store on Maurice vs Mobetta; as Brown has more in store, not only on this new effort, but coming down the pike. Know that Maurice vs Mobetta is a gumbo sound lab for this dynamic young trumpet player-arranger-producer.

South London producer Paul White and Florida vocalist/rapper Eric Biddines have joined forces to form new duo Golden Rules. Their debut album of soulful, psychedelic hiphop features Yasiin Bey (fka Mos Def) and its sound recalls Outkast and Cee-Lo.
Golden Rules have already seen radio support from BBC Radio 1's Huw Stephens, plus 6 Music's Gilles Peterson, Tom Ravenscroft, and Mary Anne Hobbs, while key online hip-hop sites such as The Source and 2 Dope Boyz have been quick to recommend the group. Paul White has been described by the Independent as “a 21st Century DJ Shadow”, counts Madlib and Diplo among his fans and is best known for his production for the likes of Danny Brown and Charli XCX. Newcomer Eric Biddines has built a career in Florida and his last video received heavy rotation on MTV Jams, but this is his first step on the international stage.

About Day Drunk EP
It’s the return of the non-fiction writer stranded in the made-up world. We last heard from Michigan’s Red Pill on his Mello Music Group debut, this spring’s Look At What This World Did To Us—a savage and sardonic diatribe against the modern condition.
 
In the interim, the former factory machinist turned his psychic bloodletting into a sustainable career. Things finally look up for the self-proclaimed “Leonard Letdown.” He toured the EU with Fashawn and Exile, spent the early fall on a 40 city North American tour with Murs, and forged a profound connection with a fanbase exhausted from the lies told to us by politicians, rappers, and ourselves.
 
Its immediate follow-up—the Day Drunk EP—offers a requisite counterbalance to the poison-tipped bleakness of its predecessor. If LAWTWDTU was the rap equivalent of Charles Bukowski’s Ham on Rye, the Day Drunk EP is closer to Notes From a Dirty Old Man. It’s slightly lighter and more playful, stocked with slick talk, wry one-liners, and enough liquor to drown even the most debauched barfly.
 
With production from Oddisee, Exile, Paul White, and Red Pill himself, the beats offer an almost psychedelic slant that blend seamlessly with Pill’s artful complaints. Whereas the last record seemed to sink into a permanent midnight of the soul, this one attempts to reconcile the inequities of life with our own ineluctable realities.
 
The first song, “What You Wish For,” finds Pill half-jokingly offering the advice to give up on work in favor of the 24-hour party. It’s not necessarily a call to hedonism, but rather a way to remind people to wake up from fugue states filled with false religion and Internet pseudo-wisdom.
 
There’s the greasy guitars and hard drums of “90s Money,” a sly love letter towards a vanished world. Pill calls himself a “loser like a Beck record,” a “fat Jesse Einsenberg"  a loose cannon drinking whiskey with two hands, listening to Bitches Brew, eating chicken vindaloo. That’s just in the first minute.
 
Despite the brighter beats and attempt to find levity in our woes, there’s still the searing fear and loathing that makes Pill so compelling. He compares himself to an unloaded gun, maligns the world that’s got him by the throat. He confesses his myriad anxieties, depression, and desire to write a happy song. Only Earl Sweatshirt can match Red Pill at their mutual ability to celebrate the isolated joy of never wanting to leave the house.
 
Maybe it’s the EP’s finale and title track that captures the contradictions at the heart of the music. It’s a eulogy to the summertime, a drinking song undercut by premonitions of doom, a reminder for us not to waste the days until our funeral—a toast to day drinking to forget our own collective pain.

Tofu is the white cat on the front cover, Alter is the spotty one on the back. Both share their crib with DJ Adlib who is extending his Hi-Hat Club record “Haus & Garten” with this EP. “Tofu & Alter” assembles six remixes by Dexter, James Pants, Julian Dyne, TBRCK, Danny Breaks and Adlib himself. Featuring Declaime, Black Spade,  Frank Nitt, The Primeridian, Panet Asia and Adi Dick (Fat Freddy's Drop) on vocals. Robert Winter did the photos and Chicken George the artwork.
