Two brothers, surname Summers. London rap duo Summers Sons drop the second single from their forthcoming album project ‘Still Nothing Still’. Turt and Slim have updated their beloved jazz rap sound with a more electronic, trip-hoppy vibe.

In ‘Growing Pains’ Turt deals with the impermanence of life. A topic that has gotten a new urgency for him since having been diagnosed with epilepsy in 2021.“ One thing I've learnt in life is you never see it coming“ Turt explains. “Any day it can all change. The impossible to imagine is just round the corner. For better or worse. Sometimes it's painful but it's all growth. Still nothing still.” The single comes with a great visualizer by Seb Luke-Virgo.

Since 2018 Summers Sons have released four albums (‘Undertones’, ‘Uhuru’, ‘The Rain’, ‘Nostalgia’) and a string of high profile collabos with artists like C.Tappin, Twit One, The Silhouettes Project and Koralle. Not forgetting Slim's beat tape for KO-OP.

In 2023, Turt released the album ‘The Questions’ as one third of the project Syrup (the other two are Twit One & C.Tappin) while Slim released an album project (‘Cerulean’) with Benaddict and Ella Mae Suref. Turt also dropped two singles with the Silhouettes Project alongside Nix Northwest and Frankie Stew & Harvey Gunn.

Today's premiere from rising duo BOREAL SUN is a must hear for fans of contempory jazz, soul and West African rhythms. 

A collaboration between vocalist Liselotte Östblom (Sput, Ghost-Note) and producer/multi-instrumentalist Matt Roberts (Cleo Sol, Jorja Smith), BOREAL SUN are set to release their highly anticipated second single ‘New Beginning’ via Bridge The Gap on Thursday 7th March. Another taster of forthcoming debut EP ‘Dawn’, it follows the success of "future jazz & broken beat" tinged "< html > Code", which premiered on BBC Radio 6 before finding support across the likes of Jazz FM, Rinse FM and NTS.

"New Beginning" sees the duo channel West African influences into a utopian tale of endless possibilities and opportunities to flourish. The optimistic lyrical tone is mirrored by uplifting melodies, the dancing flute of Gareth Lockrane, impressive, flowing horn arrangements and the driving percussion of djembe master Yahael Camara Onono (Balimaya Project).

Turt: „September 1st 2021, I woke up in hospital in a lot of pain. It was the second time in three months and both times I'd suffered five seizures. After a lot of tests and an MRI, I was diagnosed with epilepsy. The doctor showed me my test results and told me I had abnormal brain waves and excessive electrical activity in my brain. Too much electric in my brain? That made sense to me.

I knew it was important to talk about Epilepsy on this album, to understand my own experiences but also to help other people do the same. Epilepsy has taken its toll on me mentally and physically but the diagnosis gave me a framework to better understand my brain, and forced me to be more mindful in how I balance and direct my energy. Every experience, good or bad, brings new perspectives. This one hit me hard, but it also sparked so many of the ideas that formed this album. I guess everything happens for a reason!"

Turt: “I wrote this one after getting beat up and robbed. Again. Last time they had me eating through a straw for two weeks! Fear is vital to teach us what’s safe, but staying on guard is exhausting when your environment is dangerous. Eventually that fear turns to anger. Anger turns to desperation. Everyone has a breaking point; a cornered animal is a dangerous one. And there’s a lot of people in desperate situations.“

‘Still Nothing Still’ will be available digital and on LP on April 12th and is accompanied by a dope short-film by Seb Luke-Virgo

Recorded as part of a four-day session at Berlin’s Brewery Studios with a cast of close collaborators from both Budapest and Berlin’s vibrant jazz scenes, Destruction Everywhere marks the beginning of a new chapter for Àbáse.

The track features Ziggy Zeitgeist (30/70) on drums, Ori Jacobson on saxophone, flautist Fanni Zahár, Andras Koroknay on bass and Ghanaian percussionist Eric Owusu. The release brings in an era of partnership with Analogue Foundation, who are dedicated to preserving and furthering analogue creation via record releases, international events, and activities at its recording studio and hi-fi listening bar. The Foundation is headed up by Grammy-winning New York City recording and mixing engineer Russel Elvado, Soundwalk Collective, and Berlin recording and mix engineer Erik Breuer.

Destruction Everywhere

If 2022’s The Children Of Scorpio was the debut album that turned people onto the world of Project Gemini aka Paul Osborne, Colours & Light is the body of work that will be buried deep into their hearts. It is a majestic album, bringing together the worlds of folk rock, psych soundtracks and hazy cinematic funk.
 
A growing confidence and ease emanate from the writing and production of this sophomore LP, bolstered by the reception to his standout debut. “It’s a more layered and diverse record” Paul mentions, “with a more outward-looking, global sound, born out of the records I was listening to and the musicians I was lucky enough to collaborate with”. It feels relaxed yet self-assured, with a kaleidoscope of sounds that twist together in a mesmerising fashion.
 
The theme of the album developed naturally through the lyrics Paul began writing. A creative process both plagued and fed by insomnia, nourished by relationships, entwined in emotions, nights out, nights in and the after-effects on the human condition. Relatable themes yet seen through the prism of a soundscape that takes in many a different culture and scene. From acid folk to psych-funk, Francophile elements to Anatolian and Eastern inspirations, all interlocking and rotating as one.
 
Drawing inspiration from those he admires, Colours & Light radiates with collaborations. The title track, which tips its hat to a live 1973 TV version of Pentangle’s ‘Wedding Dress’, features the folk rock, guitar brilliance of Jack Sharp from Wolf People/Large Plants.
 
Elsewhere, two tracks are blessed by the sultry, smokey French vocals of Gloria’s Wendy Martinez, ‘Extra Nuit’ and ‘Entre chien et loup’. The former echoes Paul's love of classic French psych-pop from the late ’60s and early ’70s and artists such as Laurance Vanay, Calcium, Leonie, and Serge Gainsbourg. Martinez's sublime vocal work nestles perfectly within Paul's psych-folk-funk productions, as her Gloria partner, Alexis Morel (aka Kid Victrola) sprinkles a dose of entrancing guitar line magic on proceedings.
 
The list of collaborations extends further with Raz and Markey Funk, drummer Tony Coote and percussionist Paul Elliott all featuring. Regular collaborator and underground icon Barrie Cadogan (Little Barrie) returns along with Bert Page from The Cromagnon Band, who between them provide a hit of whacked-out, fuzzed-up country guitar and Moog madness respectively on ‘Lost In The Woods (Bacchanal)’.
 
Rounding off the record Paul’s daughter, Olivia Osborne, supplies the keyboard intro on the penultimate track ‘Twilight’. Dorian Conway from The Soundcarriers (whose bandmate Paul Isherwood returns on mixing duties) then layers echoing heavy flute parts to magically capture the psychedelic sunrise images brought to mind. 
 
Balancing light and shade on this record, there is beauty and tension all wrapped up in Paul’s vivid and visceral, storytelling gift.

Even though profile pictures on Instagram aren’t blue anymore, the political and social crisis in Sudan is still real. “The best way to describe Sudan right now is, it doesn’t feel like home anymore,“ explains MC and singer Zen-Zin the situation in his home country. „I love this country and its people but it's beyond me and it's beyond any other civilian out here. We have to deal with the reality and the results of whatever choices other people have made.“

Together with the German beatmaker Pawcut, Zen-Zin is releasing the EP “Ripple Effect” on 28th February, their first vital sign since their debut album “Butterfly Effect” on Jakarta Records. While more famous Sudanese rappers like Oddisee or Bas (from J.Cole’s Dreamville team) are reporting from the Diaspora in the United States, Zen-Zin lives and works in Khartum, the capital of Sudan.

„It’s hard to stay positive in a negative environment,“ he states in regard to the challenges he faces while making music under these circumstances. „It gets to me like it gets to everybody else. Sometimes I am just not in the mood to create music and write raps because when you are dealing with the harsh realities it's hard to be creative. But on the flipside, you are taking in all these experiences and the mood of the moment. It's like you are tapping into the pulse of the nation. Sometimes I am feeling like a psychologist, sometimes I feel like a reporter by telling you how my reality looks like.“

For Zen-Zin, too, the internet is the link to the rest of the world. Still, he doesn’t own an Instagram profile, nor does he publish music videos or artist photos. Instagram, music videos, artist photos? For Zen-Zin promoting his music is first and foremost a question of safety.
„When I write my music I am telling you what’s going on in my life and in the lives of the people around me without actually giving you guys names and locations. I am very careful“.
