The 3rd collaboration of prolific cellist Sara Oswald and electronic musician Feldermelder evokes captivating sensations that oscillate between impending doom and hope. The albums’ sonic journey is highly immersive, transporting the listener from one cerebral landscape to another. Trained in baroque cello and advocating improvised music, Sara Oswald is the perfect match for sound artist and electronic musician Feldermelder. She plays solo, composes for film and theatre and collaborates with musicians like The Young Gods, Pascal Auberson, Sophie Hunger and Julian Sartorius. Feldermelder is a polymathic creative whose artistry spans composition, sound design, installation and code. He is co-founders of -OUS and part of Encor.studio, a collective of artists who specialise in creating immersive audio-visual installations. Through his work, he explores the idea of secrecy and its impact on our lives, using music and sound to create a thought-provoking and immersive experience for his audience.

nebulo is a French electronic musician based in Dordogne. He's released on labels such as Hymen, Orange Milk, Conditional, Le Cabanon (immense Parallaxes !)... and 3OP, for an essential LP with Horla, Pace Serpente (3OP008), as Othello Aubern.

The process here is experimental, the result immediate. MMXXII transcends the hyper-consumable towards a true piece of art. Indeed, the whole sonic palette derives from vocal sample sound-banks. One-shots recordings are altered, recontextualized, sublimized to the point of forgetting their origin. Raw materials with astonishing plasticity, conducive to countless melodic, micro-tonal, autotuned, rhythmic and timbral experiments.

One might dread some prevailing gimmicky concept within the music : it's quite the opposite. I've listened to this record dozens of times, from nebulo's early snippets he shared on Instagram to document his process to the masters : the marvelous, luxuriant, nuanced and overall breathtaking tunes instantly and repeatedly won me over. A total success.

Rather than dissecting each track (I could do that eh), let’s focus on MMXXII's 2 singles. zt is an unstoppable euphoric and visceral banger. sfumato, while being a formidable ear-worm, gives me goosebumps each and every time I listen to it. The rest of the LP is equally as decisive and adventurous.

MMXXII is a fabulous - pop - record.

La démarche ici est expérimentale, le résultat immédiat. MMXXII transcende l’hyper-consommable vers une oeuvre d’art à part entière. Ainsi, l’intégralité de la palette sonore provient de banques de samples vocaux. Des one-shots altérés, re-contextualisés, sublimés au point de très vite en oublier l’origine. De la matière première étonnamment plastique, propice à toutes les expérimentations mélodiques, micro-tonales, autotunées, rythmiques et timbrales.

On pourrait redouter le gimmick, la prévalence du concept sur la musique : il n’en est rien. J’ai écouté le disque des dizaines de fois, depuis les premiers teasers sur Instagram pendant lesquels nebulo partageait l’avancé de ses recherches jusqu’aux masters : je me suis simplement fait emporter par des morceaux incroyables, riches, nuancés, beaux au possible. La réussite est totale.

Au lieu de disséquer chaque morceau (je pourrais le faire eh), focus sur les 2 singles de MMXXII. zt est un imparable banger euphorique et visceral. sfumato, en plus d’être un redoutable vers d’oreille, me fout la chair de poule à chaque écoute. Le reste de l’album est tout aussi décisif et aventureux.

MMXXII est un fabuleux disque, pop.
