As a person, Jason Luxton’s broad interests in a wide range of material, from horror film scores to the haunting themes in gothic literature, have been a force behind his creative outlets. The Bournemouth-based producer's take on the genre is balanced on a razor's edge between functionality and experimentation. That careful contrast defines his tracks, which can be quiet and subdued or huge and immersive. Flagrantly disregarding tempo restrictions he effortlessly traverses from the beat-free passage into cyberpunk-tinged Techno fare.

Considering his one of a kind, dystopian aesthetic, it’s not a surprise his forward thinking releases graced such respected labels as Samurai, 31, Rupture or UVB-76.

Bass focus - this name represents exactly what our this month’s guest @lona_my stands for. From Drum and Bass to Dubstep, Bassmusic has a special place in her heart for nearly her whole life. Accordingly she started DJing three years ago and co-founded the eponymous crew @bassfocusleipzig. In times of lockdowns they have organized livestreams together that are focused on a balanced line-up to give Flinta*DJs more attention than before.

“This mix showcases forthcoming music from myself, UVB-76 and The Stone Tapes,” says Bournemouth based producer Jason Luxton aka Overlook. Luxton has released his stripped back, ominous productions via various European drum ’n’ bass and techno labels, but the majority of his output has been presented by the Bristol based UVB-76 imprint, founded by Gremlinz and producer trio Ruffhouse in 2015. Beyond the music of Overlook, the label-cum-collective’s back catalogue has a cohesive sound, described by Ruffhouse member Nick Callaghan as having a “thick atmosphere” and a “deepness”, which matches a strong and eerie visual identity.

The Stone Tapes is one of several UVB sub labels and is co-run by Luxton. Speaking to Louis Pattison in The Wire 424, he describes it as being concerned with sound as “audio apparitions”, inspired by ghost stories and building on the idea of fleetingness or space within a track, leaving room for uncanny apparitions of the imagination.
