Der Raum ist eine grundlegende Komponente der Wirklichkeit. Raum definiert sich als Ausdehnung in Höhe, Länge und Breite. Philosophisch strittig ist, ob der Raum „an sich“, unabhängig von Wahrnehmung und Vorstellung, existiert oder lediglich eine Anschauungsform des wahrnehmenden Subjekts ist, ob also mathematischer Raum, physikalischer Raum und der Raum der Erfahrung zusammenfallen. Ein Raum dient der Darstellung und Analyse sozialer Strukturen und individueller Positionen. Davon ausgehend sollte eigentlich jeder wissen was der Raum ist, aber um ganz ehrlich zu sein, für jeden ist der Raum etwas anderes und deshalb erlebt jeder den Raum so wie er es für richtig hält.
