To participate in the Haiku Music challenge::

- Make a song in response to the weekly assigned poem (a new poem is published every Wednesday)
- When choosing a title for your piece also include the assignment number, for example “Title of your track (naviarhaiku382)”

- If you’re a Soundcloud user, upload it on Soundcloud and send me the URL via private message, or tag me in the track.
- If you upload your music on Youtube, Bandcamp or anywhere else, upload your submission and then send me the link by email at marco@naviarrecords.com or contact me on X, Facebook or Instagram

Like other “Beat Poets”, Jack Kerouac was attracted to Eastern philosophy, perception, and poetry. Together with Ginsberg and Whalen, he helped “Americanise” the haiku form and introduce it to a wider audience outside of Japan.

“The American Haiku is not exactly the Japanese Haiku. The Japanese Haiku is strictly disciplined to seventeen syllables but since the language structure is different I don’t think American Haikus (short three-line poems intended to be completely packed with Void of Whole) should worry about syllables because American speech is something again…bursting to pop.

Above all, a Haiku must be very simple and free of all poetic trickery and make a little picture and yet be as airy and graceful as a Vivaldi Pastorella.”

This started life in Nov 2023 along with Disquiet Junto 0622, which is to say a recording of acoustic guitar I made in 1988. (https://ift.tt/MwTqgeO)

Tools used - Ableton Live, a handful of Max for Live devices, K-Devices Shaper, AudioDamage Fluid, AudioDamage Ratshack Reverb, AudioDamage AdVerb, Monolake PitchLoop89 & Ableton native devices, along with iZotope Ozone 9 for mastering.

Guitar improvisation without touching the strings, only the volume poti. The prerequisite is high volume, Marshall JCM 800 and 4x12 Cabinet, line six delay, Overlord overdrive and Ibanez tube screamer, and the willingness to destroy one's ears. And,of course, a Fender Contemporary Strat, white.

Quite minimal for this one, the basic structure was created using Stochas; probabilistic sequencer to control an instance of Surge XT and Solinoid virtual synths both running custom patches. The output from there was processed through various delay and reverb plugins.

oshio Kiyosaki (1922-1999) was a Japanese haiku poet and scholar of Japanese literature. He published a biography of Kyoshi Takahama in 1966 and co-authored Kyoshi Monogatari, another study on the renowned haiku poet, in 1979.

The Milky Way (amanogawa, or "Heavenly River" in Japanese) is a kigo for Autumn, mainly because that's when the galaxy is most visible in Japan.

Soundscape Maa was released by the Istitute For Alien Research (ifarlabel) in a compilation entitled Sonder.

The composition combines everyday sounds such as footsteps on different surfaces, the tearing of paper, lighting a match, playing tennis, clapping hands, horses clattering, machine noises and the like with voice samples from my archive, which the Dutch mezzo-soprano singer Jannie Pranger made available to me some time ago and of which a few have been electroni- cally manipulated. These two components are tghtly interwoven and form an exciting, multi-layered and multi-faceted musique concrète.
The everyday sounds are treated in the same way as the vocal sounds; for example, in the way one deals with the sounds of percussion instruments, which are also largely noisy. A drum roll, a cymbal crash, a rattle ... or an electric saw, a creaking door, shattering glass, the impact of a golf ball, a swarm of bees, etc. The mezzo-soprano voice involved is extremely varied. Snapping or hissing sounds, whispering, speaking, singing, whistling, blowing and every conceivable sound that can be produced with the voice are included. Earth is the only planet known to date that sounds; where we are constantly surrounded by sounds and noises produced by humans and animals, wind, water, etc. I wanted to represent and celebrate a tiny section of this unique sonic diversity of planet Earth in my composition. The word “maa” in the title is the Finnish word for earth/land.

I'm primarily a visual artist both 2D and 3D, for the last decade I've operated almost exclusively in the digital 3D realm.   since the late 80s I've made periodic forays into the sonic world, MIDI sequencing, minimalism, musique concrète, found sounds  and improvisation. I am seldom happy with anything and seldom consider a piece finished.

Naviar is a music community and label. Through regular publications, open projects and events, we explore the connection between experimental music and traditional Japanese poetry.
