the Provincials è un progetto musicale a cura di Rosario Memoli, nato come momento ludico di sperimentazione garage/low-fi nel 2001 e trasformato in band nel 2004 con il nome di Provolone Records (che diventerà poi il titolo del loro primo album). 
La band propone un rock variamente influenzato dalla musica anglofona che va dagli anni ’50 ai 2000, con una spiccata attenzione per la forma canzone. Negli anni condivide il palco con band come Diaframma, Giorgio Canali e Rosso fuoco, Jennifer Gentle, Melomane, Vibrators, e partecipa a numerosi festival tra cui il Ritmi Globali Europei nel 2004 e il MEI nel 2008. 
Nonostante la cospicua produzione di demo e singoli, pubblicano un solo album nel 2013 - il già citato “Provolone Records” , uscito per Disco Futurissimo e distribuito da Goodfellas - che suscita curiosità e interesse per le sgangherate sonorità new psych con registrazioni datate 2001-2003, in linea con quanto si stava sviluppando nelle scene musicali d’oltreoceano (Thee Oh Sees, Ty Segal, King Gizzard...). 
Con il tempo il suono si evolve verso un rock a tratti pop con ritornelli orecchiabili, che mantiene il contatto con le più disparate declinazioni del genere, dal beat alla psichedelia, dall’art-rock al metal. 
I periodici cambi di line-up consentono comunque alla band di avere una buona attività live fino al 2014. 
La pubblicazione di un nuovo disco, “Sick”, registrato in un’organica sessione di registrazione nel 2011 e missato nel 2025, coprodotto con I Make Records e Label XXXV in uscita il 9 gennaio 2026, ripropone la band con una formazione a tre elementi che vede Rosario Memoli alla voce e alla chitarra, Luciano Evangelista al basso e Mario Villani alla batteria.
