Hello everyone, and welcome onboard the PFG Progcast, your weekly 1st Class trip around the world of Progressive Beats....

...and BREAKS! Today our journey goes transatlantic as we head into the US, and a Florida based DJ whose focus is all about those broken drums! Continually forging ahead with his unique sound, and with 25 years experience in the game, PFG Give it up.... for Joe Wink! 

As a child his father owned the counties only Vinyl & Cassette store, therefore Joe grew up immersed in music. He was fortunate enough to be in the right place at the right time, and that place was Orlando, FL 1992.

His experiences during this time with electronic music and the nightclubs lead way to over 25 years of dedication to the genre of breaks and in particular 'Progressive Breaks'. Inspired by Hybrid, Lostep, Way Out West and Sasha early on helped sculpt his musical taste to involve deep, intelligent and often emotional tunes. 

For the last 7 years his show 'Broken Essence'  has been syndicated internationally on several major stations, and recruits guest mixes from the leading producers and DJs in the genre.  He is a resident DJ on Subcode, the station that airs Broken Essence,  as well as running the 'Progressive Breaks' group on Facebook as a resource to find, share and discuss the genre's best music. 21paths has been Djing since 1996, though he was known by the name of DJ Alias until recently. When he began djing he was heavily influenced by DJs and artists such as Sasha, John Digweed, Quivver, Hybrid, Jackal & Hyde and Dynamix II leading to his unique tastes in music and style of mixing. Break Beat is his heart and soul but on occasion, you can hear him throwing down some of darkest of house and trance. One thing is guaranteed, any time he throws down it's going to make you move.

This is Our Time Together

At 14/15 years of age, Derek and I met each other in the early 80’s at a Liberty High School dance and had been friends ever since. I remember playing records at each other’s house over the years .  We were friends and graduated together in High School in 1988. Eventually I backed off because of my hearing. My hearing loss made me somewhat antisocial and I faded away from the music scene and started a family while watching Derek soar into the underground stardom. After leaving the scene over 20 years ago, I reconnected with Derek and he had convinced me to get back into things. After mentoring me for 2 years he asked me to join his Cognitive Music label and had made me the head of a monthly mix series called The Bass Episodes. I was ecstatic. I felt like I was part of something. A brotherhood and I was happy. We were in the middle of releasing our 3rd Bass mix for the series during the weekend that he died. I was away for the weekend and will always have that “what if” scenario if I might have been there to help him. But he didn’t want anyone’s help. He was tired.
Derek was a hard person to satisfy. He was a perfectionist in everything he did and he expected nothing but 100 % from anyone associated with his work. He had always told me to “go/think outside the box”. So with this mix I am telling my story of our time together. I spent weeks searching for the right music for this mix and tried to orchestrate it just as he would suggest. The 1st part of the mix is made with tracks that are out of my usual area of what I normally play and has remixes of music that we all grew up with. The middle of the mix is my “out of the box”. Mixing 3 different versions of Jackal & Hyde’s Bad Robot which was something that I had tried to do in the past, and going into the Electro Bass tracks that I love to play today. The last 2 tracks of the mix are the remixes of the records we used to play together over and over at each other’s house when we were kids.
I’ve struggled letting go of Derek for the past 3 months and this mix is my closure. My permission to move on. I miss you brother and will keep all of our conversations and time together close to my heart.  I pray that your finally at peace and hope we see each other again on the other side some day. Long live DJ D-Xtreme aka Derek Steplight.
