The ill.Methodology made iTunes, Beatport, JunoDownload and Addictech Top 10 charts so we had to do the tunes justice when choosing remixers, the result is this coming series featuring top producers in a range of genres. On this EP the styles range from funky Glitch Hop from Mr Bill and SubSqwad to Dubstep bangers from Satoru and Stephan Jacobs, Drum & Bass and Jungle smashers from Jacky Murda and Snareophobe, booming bass in Trap format from Bad Behavior and then even some experimental flavors added for good measure by Fine Cut Bodies and Circuit Bent.

At this point it’s easy to say ill.Gates is one of the most dynamic ‘mover and shakers’ in Electronic music, being a man at the forefront of production with tunes that have made the Top 10 Charts on iTunes, Beatport, Addictech, JunoDownload and many more, he has also been one of the leading Ableton template developers for production and performance for many years and the number of touring Glitch Hop and Dubstep artists (including the likes of Bassnectar) that he as either helped with their production / performance setup or collaborated with (Datsik, Mimosa, Beats Antique, Filastine, Opiuo ... ) or merely inspired them to get of their ass and create something, it is now an understatement to say ill.Gates is a creative force to behold and impossible to pigeonhole.

As the globe still reacts to the earthquakes that have left thousands buried beneath rock and rubble over a three week period of initial strikes and aftershocks, Be Green Records and Street Ritual have teamed up to bring you a benefit album aimed at the heart of Nepal’s stricken population. 

Featuring a lush mixture of deep bass rhythms, healing sonic textures and earth drawn sounds sown with modulated funk beats and classic instrumentation, the Nepalese Relief Benefit Compilation will directly support relief efforts in Nepal while illustrating sound and art’s power to heal in a physical realm as well as that of perception. 

Proceeds from the album will be directed to conscious relief organizations already on the ground, allowing the album and its contributors to make a greater impact on aid efforts with each purchase.

I was messing around with his modular rig + my Mother 32 & Makenoise 0-Coast whilst he was playing a Nord Stage & Dave Smith Instruments - Prophet 6 over it (guy is a BEAST of a keyboardist).

This was the most fun I've had with live music performance in quite a while. 

I've realised over the past 18 months or so that ALL live musical performances are conditional. Some are more conditional than others. In most cases, musical performances adhere to a coherent tempo, key, vibe, feel/swing/groove & motif, and I feel that's important. You need to be coherent with other players for the end result to have any sort of real impact or weight in it's emotional conveyance. So over this past 18 months I've been trying to find a nice balance between coherency/end-result & emotional/ musical expression - I feel like this is the closest I've come to that so far.

Articulated and refined, ‘Lego Bolognese’ is a delicious exploration of funky and glitchy beats distinctly rooted in a mellow blues oriented soundscape. With no sound placeless or any moment akward this EP keeps the head nodding from start to finish. Another huge release from Mr. Bill with a bonus top notch remix from Love and Light!

Rich, bluesy flavours set the space in ‘Heisenbogan’, and are quickly infiltrated by tight percussion and hyper-specific bass articulations. With dense layers of muted guitars and a wild west twang echoing over a powerful and polished glitch hop beat. Soft chords take you into a lounge-y breakdown and allow the track to simmer into a mellow flow.

In ‘Piss Rash Blues’ an organic drum kit along with a precision cut Saxophone flare lock into an immediately entrancing groove with a raw organic soundscape that seems clearer by the moment. Synthetic pads and melodic snippets balance the spectrum solidifying this song into another deep and loungey number.

‘SBS Quality’ immediately captures the attention with tightening percussive elements and raw textures stretched over warm and bendy chords. Quickly dropping into dense flashes of serialised funk that are locked together by an incredibly crisp beat. Unfolding in a sweet lullaby of a breakdown, the second half culminates in a fury of bubbles, funk and percussive genius before gently settling to rest.

Closing out the EP. is ‘Love and Light’s’ rocking remix of ‘Heisenbogan’. It’s huge beat and raw bass tones, topped of with vocal embellishments and airy sweeps give it an extra crunky feel. With rip roaring synth bass and slap bass extractions cutting through a rich atmosphere, this remix is sure rock the dance floors.
