To celebrate 10 years of one of London’s most loved underground club nights, Tangent, Mr Bongo are thrilled to launch this new compilation series. Crafted by its two residents, John Gómez and Nick the Record, it aims to transmit a taste of Tangent’s spirit. A party rooted in inclusivity and open-mindedness, whose name captures the spontaneous switches in musical direction that are a defining element of their nights. For the compilation, the pair have cherry-picked a selection of their prized, rare and dancefloor-ready tracks from around the globe, that have soundtracked the past decade of parties.

Friends for close to 20 years, music lovers, record obsessives and internationally renowned DJs in their own right, John and Nick have two lifetimes worth of musical knowledge to draw from. John a long-standing NTS Radio resident and compiler for Music From Memory. Nick one of the UK’s go-to record dealers, resident DJ since the ‘90s at one of Japan’s pioneering parties, Life Force, and co-captain / co-edit-expert of Record Mission with Dan Tyler (Idjut Boys).

In 2014, the pair decided to bring some of Life Force’s grassroots principles to the UK, whilst channelling underground clubbing institution Plastic People’s meticulous attitude to sound. Tangent grew from being a small gathering of friends, to an established fixture in London’s nightlife, whilst always maintaining a strict no guest DJ policy. “As London’s clubs have become increasingly reliant on international guests, we wanted to emphasize the importance of a club night growing through its residents”, John and Nick reflect. With 10 years of the duo at the helm, an intimate connection between DJ and dancefloor has been built, allowing for freedom of expression on both sides of the decks.

Tangent reaches around the globe and across different eras to make connections that stimulate emotional reverberations in the unfamiliar. Where the blissfully Balearic ‘Laberinto’ by Miguel Perikás, goes hand-in-hand with the Cameroonian hip-house of King B.’s ‘Love is Crazy’. The thundering ‘Amek Amek’ by L'Innovateur Djoe Ahmed et le Zoukabyle, rubs shoulders with the soulful Caribbean-influenced touch of Champagn’s ‘Bel Ti Négress’. And Pellegrin El Kady’s afro-cosmic ‘Seiva de Carnaval’, crosses paths with Kajou’s Kompa disco anthem ‘Tet Chajé’.

Tangent’s longevity is in part down to it having always embraced contemporary sounds. The sub-rattling bass of Srirajah Sound System’s stunning Molam dub stepper ‘Si Phan Don Lovers Rock’ and the slow, woozy mantra of leftfield dancehall explorer Androo’s ‘Lyriso’, are two shining examples.

This compilation represents an ongoing dialogue between past and present, transporting listeners to the heart of a pure musical experience, where open minds and open hearts are eager to follow the tangent.

The second single from the forthcoming Tangent compilation on Mr Bongo, celebrating 10 years of one of London’s most loved underground club nights. Presented by its two residents, John Gomez and Nick the Record, the pair have curated a collection of prized, rare and dancefloor-ready tracks from around the globe that have soundtracked the past decade of parties. The second single from the compilation is a blissfully Balearic cut from Mallorquín keyboardist, Miguel Perikás, titled ‘Laberinto’. 

Taken from PERIKAS’ one and only solo album, the sought-after 1985 obscurity, Stress En La Ciudad on Mailer Records, ‘Laberinto’ is a dreamy hit of sunshine that sums up the sound that has become synonymous with the Balearic isles. Radiating warmth from the off, pads wash over you like Mediterranean waves, as a drum beat full of gated snares and crisp hats couple with a weighty bassline to anchor the track. Perikás’ mastery of the keys shines though, dancing between reverberating scales and glistening jazz funk infused solos, as synth arps and sultry backing vocals cement that ‘80s flavour. 

This serene, summer-soaked, Balearic floater is just as well equipped to soundtrack a sunrise, as it is a sunset, kicking off or closing a club night to remember.

HOLDTight - A1 I got troubles Hot'n'Spicy VOL2

New York City Born and New Jersey City based Chico Mann (aka Marcos Garcia), a multi instrumentalist and guitarist with the afrobeat orchestra Antibalas  is to release his solo ‘Manifest Tone EP’ through Soundway Records on 12th November. 

The EP represents four of the choicest cuts from Chico Mann’s ‘Manifest Tone’ Volumes 2&3 that until now were only available digitally. It signals the end of one phase and the start of a new chapter in Chico Mann’s career with a brand new album signed to Soundway Records for release in early 2013. 

The Manifest Tone journey began in 2004. During breaks from touring with Antibalas Marcos began crafting a more personal sound in his basement studio. A hybrid beast of culture and tone where Fela Kuti and Willie Colon meet Stevie B, Lisa Lisa, Afrika Bambaata and Kraftwerk, it lives in a landscape shaped by Africa, Cuba, New York and Miami.

These unique experimentations led to the release of ‘Manifest Tone Volume 1’ in 2006 and eventually morphed into Volumes 2 & 3 that were finished in 2008 and 2010 respectively. What sounds on paper like a meeting of styles past in reality emerges sounding incredibly fresh and original.

Over the three volumes Chico Mann’s own unique style has emerged and evolved (something he has dubbed 'Afro-Freestyle') and in 2010 he released the critically acclaimed 'Analogue Drift' album for Wax Poetics records. 

All of this paves the way for the arrival of his most accomplished and polished sound yet that will touch down in early 2013.

Chico Mann will also add to his list of remixes for the likes of Little Dragon and Hess is More by remixing Soundway's London based Ghanaian afro band Konkoma in December 2012.

Heidi Vogel debuts her solo album ‘Turn up the Quiet’ following on from her many successes with the critically acclaimed Cinematic Orchestra (Ninja Tune). A deeply moving collection of classic 60s/70s Brazilian songs, interpreted and presented in a unique, intimate fashion and with a timeless sound. 

Heidi has a voice that comes from the deepest places of the heart.  Her honest interpretation of songs, and powerful stage presence make her an utterly beguiling performer and this is the blend that emerges from her debut solo album ‘Turn up the Quiet’ where she elegantly interprets songs of great composers such as Antonio Carlos Jobim, Vinicius de Moraes and Joe Henderson.

Recorded and mixed by Demus at Fish Factory & Mancrush Studios, this album showcases the singer’s undeniable connection and resounding passion for Brazilian music. Her capacity to unfurl long-lined melodies unveils her intimate yet direct presence that goes beyond genre or style. Heidi is accompanied throughout the album by the very talented guitarist Josue Ferreira as well as guests musicians including vocalist Cleveland Watkiss, pianist Austin Peralta and Ivo Neame. The album is enhanced further by remixes from The Cinematic Orchestra, IG Culture and Emanative.

Initially making her professional debut touring with Cirque du Soleil, she became a frequent face in the London and LA jazz & soul scene where she became involved with The Cinematic Orchestra as their lead singer. This platform established her extraordinarily rich and complex vocal timbre and built her reputation outside of her home city of London, UK. By 2007, Vogel had toured all over the USA, Australia, South Africa, Canada and Europe and ended the year with a sold out concert at The Royal Albert Hall and a stunning performance live on the Jimmy Kimmel TV show. She then went on to perform the main stage at The Big Chill Festival UK in 2010, and the following year graced the stage as support for Erykah Badu at Dubai’s Chill Out Festival amongst numerous other appearances at North Sea Jazz Festival, Coachella, Gilles Peterson Worldwide and Blue Note Jazz Festival. With every performance, Heidi has been steadily exceeding her rich vocal abilities whilst gaining influential critics’ approval as a soloist. 

Her signature musicality and technique which entrances the listener is captured perfectly in this full-length offering “Turn up the quiet” which Far Out is delighted to present to a new audience
