DAORA, a 32 track blast through the freshest hip-hop, leftfield beats, afrobeat and dub-influenced sounds from Brasil. The album was compiled by respected Sao Paulo beat-head Rodrigo Brandao – who has collaborated with members of The Roots, Afro-beat master Tony Allen, producer Prince Paul (De La Soul) and artists from the Ninja Tune and Big Dada stables.

Daora features 32 tracks that represent the musicians, MCs and beat-heads making some of the most thrilling urban music in “the alternative lanes of Brasil’s third world megalopoli”. Rodrigo explains: “Blending both the foundations of boom-bap and Brasilian rhythmic and melodic heritage, Daora is an introduction to the most cutting-edge beat culture + percussive oriented music coming out of Brasil today."

On “Brilhantina” her indigenous influenced voice fits wisely to the Samba de Coco rhythms. Its ́s an outstanding track from the beginning to the end and a good example of how powerful and bass-heavy percussion-driven music from Brazil can sound these days. Renata Rosa manages to present Brazil’s musical roots in a modern guise, celebrating widely unkown facets of Brazilian music culture.

Global bass producer Maga Bo continuously explores the contours of Afro-Brazilian culture including many collaborations with some of the biggest talents in Brazil’s vast musical landscape. His track ”No Balanço da Canoa” was remixed by another production pioneer Chico Correa who was one of the first to blend Brazilian sounds of the norheast with
electronic beats back in 2003. On his remix he modernized the traditional style of the original version by adding flutes, synth basslines and strong electronic Coco stlye beats.

“In 1960 we received an invitation to play in Recife, a wonderful, exciting and dangerous place, often described as a “social jungle”. The Forró party took place on the first floor of Caxangá´s neighbourhood theatre; With its high ceilings, wooden floors and balconies, the place was perfect for these kinds of events. When all the windows were wide open, there would be a wonderful breeze during the hot tropical evenings.

Since everyone was looking for amusement, the place was packed on weekends. People from all corners of society would arrive nicely dressed, animated and chatting loudly over the sound of clinking glasses.

Pernambuco´s Cachaça, considered by many, especially by the locals, to be the best in the country, had started flowing generously and the popular sugar cane based alcohol lives up to its reputation. We always had a few shots to warm up before performing and by the time the place was packed we were already in a very good mood. 

Our local cachaça had loosened the bodies and minds of everyone in the room, people started to pair off and twirl around to the sound of forró music, smiling and sliding their feet off the floor - a reflex picked up from dancing in rural villages to avoid kicking up the dust”.
