BBC 6Music radio presenter, DJ and Future Bounce label head, Jamz Supernova presents a new compilation Dance Around The World on Mr Bongo. An evolution of her radio show, event series and Bandcamp community under the same name, this compilation plots a globe-spanning day into night voyage across 16 tracks, from artists, countries and scenes that have shaped Jamz’ musical worldview. For this first double A-side single we head to Colombia, with a reggaeton workout from Verito Asprilla soundtracking the day and a warped, dancefloor weapon courtesy of Brenda and Diva Cruz for when the sun goes down.

Split across two sides, the compilation marks two interconnected moods. The first single gives a taste of that dynamic, from the sun-soaked, storytelling sounds of the Day side, to the rowdier, more club-focussed flavour of the Night. Each scene and each artist is also one that Jamz has a personal connection to. “I picked all these places that I was inspired by, or places that I've been, where the music has really informed what I do. It was the idea that when you travel, you get to experience both the day side of somewhere and the night side, and the music and the feeling can change so much between the two”, Jamz says. 

The story of Jamz’ connection to the first track starts with a guide she met whilst in Colombia, a country she has travelled extensively. “He was insistent that I went to the Pacific side of Colombia and really wanted to show me the Afro-Colombian culture there. I then met Diego, who runs the label Disco Pacifico, who had been championing and working closely with an artist from Tumaco called Verito Asprilla. The first time she came to the UK, she jumped on my radio show and rapped live on air. I went to see her late that night in Peckham and have been a big fan of hers ever since.” The track in question ‘Quiero Ser Buena’, is a future-facing, reggaeton heater bursting with infectious energy and groove.

Showcasing Colombia at night, Brenda and Diva Cruz’s song ‘Sin Africa’ was one Jamz was trusted to A&R. Having been sent the beat by Brenda, Jamz felt there was scope to elevate the track with a vocalist. Up stepped fellow Colombian Diva Cruz, “She was very passionate about her lyrics and her delivery, calling out the way that the world has treated Africa and giving her perspective as an Afro-Colombian woman” Jamz says. Married with the pumping, heads-down Latin club sound of Brenda’s beat, it’s a powerful and poignant track, featuring a thread that permeates many of the compilation’s other songs. As Jamz mentions, “Almost everybody on this compilation has been touched or altered in some ways by colonisation. We choose joy and we choose to celebrate what we have and what we've done, but we can't ignore that there has been a colonised existence”.
