To celebrate 10 years of one of London’s most loved underground club nights, Tangent, Mr Bongo are thrilled to launch this new compilation series. Crafted by its two residents, John Gómez and Nick the Record, it aims to transmit a taste of Tangent’s spirit. A party rooted in inclusivity and open-mindedness, whose name captures the spontaneous switches in musical direction that are a defining element of their nights. For the compilation, the pair have cherry-picked a selection of their prized, rare and dancefloor-ready tracks from around the globe, that have soundtracked the past decade of parties.

Friends for close to 20 years, music lovers, record obsessives and internationally renowned DJs in their own right, John and Nick have two lifetimes worth of musical knowledge to draw from. John a long-standing NTS Radio resident and compiler for Music From Memory. Nick one of the UK’s go-to record dealers, resident DJ since the ‘90s at one of Japan’s pioneering parties, Life Force, and co-captain / co-edit-expert of Record Mission with Dan Tyler (Idjut Boys).

In 2014, the pair decided to bring some of Life Force’s grassroots principles to the UK, whilst channelling underground clubbing institution Plastic People’s meticulous attitude to sound. Tangent grew from being a small gathering of friends, to an established fixture in London’s nightlife, whilst always maintaining a strict no guest DJ policy. “As London’s clubs have become increasingly reliant on international guests, we wanted to emphasize the importance of a club night growing through its residents”, John and Nick reflect. With 10 years of the duo at the helm, an intimate connection between DJ and dancefloor has been built, allowing for freedom of expression on both sides of the decks.

Tangent reaches around the globe and across different eras to make connections that stimulate emotional reverberations in the unfamiliar. Where the blissfully Balearic ‘Laberinto’ by Miguel Perikás, goes hand-in-hand with the Cameroonian hip-house of King B.’s ‘Love is Crazy’. The thundering ‘Amek Amek’ by L'Innovateur Djoe Ahmed et le Zoukabyle, rubs shoulders with the soulful Caribbean-influenced touch of Champagn’s ‘Bel Ti Négress’. And Pellegrin El Kady’s afro-cosmic ‘Seiva de Carnaval’, crosses paths with Kajou’s Kompa disco anthem ‘Tet Chajé’.

Tangent’s longevity is in part down to it having always embraced contemporary sounds. The sub-rattling bass of Srirajah Sound System’s stunning Molam dub stepper ‘Si Phan Don Lovers Rock’ and the slow, woozy mantra of leftfield dancehall explorer Androo’s ‘Lyriso’, are two shining examples.

This compilation represents an ongoing dialogue between past and present, transporting listeners to the heart of a pure musical experience, where open minds and open hearts are eager to follow the tangent.

The chapters of this EP are written and interpreted by Theo Gramal as an invitation to dream with them, feel them, dance to them. May they be shaped by playing around with instruments or be inspirations from travels or collaborations - each pattern, baseline or melody has been a little adventure and eventually will be a new one for you, your ears and your soul.

If you don't know Masha Natanson, it's time ! She is the hidden grand voice of Europe (no joke). She sings to the perfect interpretation, hears all imperfections like an electronic tuner, she records all the polyphonic voices with a modern vision, she uses contemporary tools and she has a repertoire in dozens of languages and dialects that extends over all the balkans and eastern countries and beyond.

This EP is the beginning of a long term collaboration between them, here Dj Click wanted to give a nostalgic dimension, a sound that comes close to the Björk production's of or even sometimes, we could believe is the original sound track of “Ghost in the Shell”

The second single to come from the ‘The Globeflower Masters Vol.2’, and with a title such as 'Moogs Over Jupiter’ it’s not only literal, but also a jumping off point that enables Mark and Glenn's musical imagination to go wild. It takes the listener on a journey covering some distance – all the way to the moon! Not just any moon, but a moon orbiting the largest planet in our solar system, Jupiter. 

Mark’s Mini Moog and Jupiter 8 synthesiser are the stars of the show here, providing the perfect combination of depth and frequency to soundtrack their space-scape. Add to that some heavily effect-laden guitar from Glenn and the slow-but purposeful drive of the drums and Milo Fell’s percussion and we’re travelling without moving. 

The imagery of space travel echoes throughout this laid-back excursion. If a Moog pioneer such as Jean-Jacques Perrey had jammed with a contemporary, headsy beat-maker, the results may have been similar to this floaty as helium, cinematic, spacefaring jaunt.

Glenn Fallows & Mark Treffel - Moogs Over Jupiter

‘Glance’ is the second single to be taken from SOYUZ (COIO3) forthcoming album, ‘Force of the Wind’. It was the only song written between the sessions for the band’s previous album ‘II’ and ‘Force of the Wind’ that made it to the album in its original form. 

It’s a song inspired by measured life in the low-rise and village-like Minsk, which is the band's composer Aleksey Chumak’s hometown. It references Lo Borges' debut album and the work of Burnier e Cartier. Breezy as a summer east wind, gentle Fender Rhodes swirl, guitars sway whilst Alex's gentle ethereal vocals surf the bassline. Over too soon and akin to waking up and trying to remember a dream, the images of the song tickle away leaving you wanting more.

SOYUZ (СОЮЗ) - Glance (Мгновение)

Sounding simultaneously from the past, the present, and the future, the debut album 'MLDE' by Marxist Love Disco Ensemble seeks to eradicate both the trite from disco and the sobriety from political music. Half poetic, half tongue-in-cheek, this stunning compact eight-track album is influenced by Eastern European and Mediterranean 70s disco records. In the words of band member Paolo, ''it was written in response to hearing 'I love America' by Patrick Juvet. The song prompted the question: why does disco, a genre originally created by oppressed minorities, eventually become synonymous with Western capitalist excess?" MLDE seeks to break this connection.

Merging disco, post-disco 80s pop, and boogie into the fold, 'MLDE' was recorded using only analogue instruments, giving it warmth and space. Recorded on cassette, ½ inch tape, this gives moments of lo-fi abstraction between the beats of an aggressive, tight drum kit. Instruments used for this recording range from saxophone, trumpet, harpsichord, guitar, and rare analogue synthesisers. The bass sound is shaped by early 80s boogie records, whilst the influence of artists such as Hamlet Minassian can be heard in some of MLDE's more driving-disco outings, such as 'Hues of Red'. In the tradition of Soviet vocal group records, which the band has studied, some songs are sung by a vocal quartet in homage to this tradition. 

Tracks such as '1905' and 'Brumaire' have a greater pop aesthetic, with Paolo's vocal style on these more pop-driven songs evoking early 80s bands such as Orange Juice and Chas Jankel. 

The format and message of pop and disco are commonly viewed just to entertain and move bodies around a dancefloor; however, lyrically, the subjects range from dialectical and historical materialism, class struggle, Marxist theory and praxis, as well as the concept of Marxist disco music. 

Adding the icing to the cake, mastering don Joker aka Liam McLean dusted the album with his magic, giving the songs space where the room is needed, as well as the kick and punch demanded by the modern dancefloor.

Marxist Love Disco Ensemble - Manifesto

John Gómez and Nick the Record present a collection of prized, rare and dancefloor-ready tracks from around the globe that have soundtracked the past decade of parties. The first single from the compilation is a stunning, joy filled, Kompa disco anthem courtesy of Kajou’s ‘Tet Chajé’.

The early years of the party saw the pair delving deep into the afro-disco and zouk crates. One firm favourite is this sparkling slice of Haitian disco heat from 1985. A track that captures the energy of humid nights in the packed discotheques of the Haitian diaspora. With a hint of Lincoln Olivetti Brazilian boogie vibes weaved within, ‘Tet Chajé’ is dosed up on funk basslines, strutting disco-tinged guitars and glimmering percussion. A foundation that lets the addictive, harmonising, Haitian Creole vocals transport you to sunnier settings.

A super rare, Caribbean cut that gives a glimpse into Tangent’s eclectic taste, finally given the remastered reissue it deserves.

Kajou - Tet Chajé

The second single from the forthcoming Tangent compilation on Mr Bongo, celebrating 10 years of one of London’s most loved underground club nights. Presented by its two residents, John Gomez and Nick the Record, the pair have curated a collection of prized, rare and dancefloor-ready tracks from around the globe that have soundtracked the past decade of parties. The second single from the compilation is a blissfully Balearic cut from Mallorquín keyboardist, Miguel Perikás, titled ‘Laberinto’. 

Taken from PERIKAS’ one and only solo album, the sought-after 1985 obscurity, Stress En La Ciudad on Mailer Records, ‘Laberinto’ is a dreamy hit of sunshine that sums up the sound that has become synonymous with the Balearic isles. Radiating warmth from the off, pads wash over you like Mediterranean waves, as a drum beat full of gated snares and crisp hats couple with a weighty bassline to anchor the track. Perikás’ mastery of the keys shines though, dancing between reverberating scales and glistening jazz funk infused solos, as synth arps and sultry backing vocals cement that ‘80s flavour. 

This serene, summer-soaked, Balearic floater is just as well equipped to soundtrack a sunrise, as it is a sunset, kicking off or closing a club night to remember.

About this edit : 
'' Passionate about travel, music and cultures of the world, especially African and South American, I discovered this original in 2017 when it was released.
This edit is a tribute to the Afro-Brazilian culture in which I spent 3 years of my life, including 5 months in Sao Paulo in 2013. I found the original by chance in my playlist, it gave me smile and joy. During these 2 months of confinement, I started playing the guitar again and replay some pieces of my adolescence.
I missed this relationship with the instrument and reminded me of my beginnings of passion for music and creative freedom.
Music is a powerful bridge between the souls of this world. May it bring you beautiful energies and vibrations '' @kaob
