On this day we mark the 10 year anniversary of the passing of one of the most influential musical geniuses of our time,  the one and only Gil Scott-Heron.  We pulled out some of his musical work and mixed it with some interview snippets from throughout his life. Hope you enjoy the mix.

Next up in our Record Club guest mix series are The Pro-Teens. Helmed by prolific drummer and percussionist Hudson Whitlock, the Melbourne-based band just released their new album ‘I Flip My Life Every Time I Fly’ on Mr Bongo. It is the latest musical concoction from Whitlock's eccentric brain, marrying the soul/funk roots of sample culture with the principles of boom-bap hip hop. This mix is a perfect accompaniment to the album. It takes you through a patchwork of soul, hip hop, funk, breaks, soundtrack nuggets, jazzy moments, and a bevvy of tracks that you may not know, but will 100% recognise from their sampled guise.

During the lockdown of 2021 Glyn Bigga Bush decided to revisit an album, he released in 2004: BiggaBush Free. At that time he was looking for ways to break away from his regular working methods, find new grooves and styles and perhaps to draw a line under his previous work with Rockers Hi Fi.

Freevisited sees him come full circle on this concept, further developing those ideas with the benefit of more years of experience at the mixing desk and a wider range of influences to draw from. The dub effects and techniques he championed during the 90s with Rockers are still there if anything more widescreen and epic than ever before. Beats are crisper and tougher, the pads are deeper and lusher and the overall effect is of ideas taken to the next level.

his week’s mix comes from Balamii resident, Coop Audio affiliate and Free Range founder Donwella. Informed by her time living in South Africa and London, Donwella’s eclectic sonic palette has been blowing us away each and every month on her regular self-titled show on Balamii.

As well as broadcasting, Donwella selects as part of the Coop Audio collective, a non-profit soundsystem group based between London and Bristol, and also runs Free Range, a monthly party in London featuring some of the best selectors the UK has to offer.
