Eigentlich solltest du heute hier bei uns sein. Eigentlich sollten wir mit dir lachen, mit dir anstoßen, Kuchen essen und dich feiern. Alles mit dir, unserem Geburtstagskind. Stattdessen sind wir alleine, in unserer Mitte und vor allem in unserem Herzen fehlt ein so wundervoller Mensch. 

Wie gerne würde ich dir auf die Schulter klopfen, wie das große Brüder so machen. Wie gerne würde ich dir persönlich gratulieren. Wie gerne würde ich dir dieses Set schenken, damit du es mit deinen Freunden hören kannst. 

Das Schlimmste ist, dass wir einfach nichts ändern können. Das Einzige, was wir tun können, ist so laut die Musik aufzudrehen, damit du es im Himmel hören kannst. Auf dich anzustoßen und daran zu denken, wie wundervoll es ist, dass du geboren wurdest und wir dich kennen- und liebenlernen durften.

Lay-Far is back with “Be The Change (feat. Pete Simpson)”, a soul infused second single from his upcoming third album War is Over out later this year. The single will be released on Lay-Far’s own label In-Beat-Ween on April 6th and features an additional b-side as well as an alternative mix by Kid Sublime and an acoustic version with dbnn. With an uptempo breakbeat the track builds with a shimmering swirl before the grooving bassline drops in as the first key element. Pete Simpson not only provides the lead vocals but also is credited as a co-writer and performed the bass parts as well. Dreamy synth chords glide around the bassline and drum beats as an additional piano and vocal loops are introduced to add tension in the ascension to the first verse. Simpson’s vocals are soulful and inspiring, with the chorus playing off of the famous Ghandi quote, “Be the change you want to see in this world.”

“Be The Change” certainly plays upon the modern funk styles we have seen emerge over the past few years from producers around the globe. Losing a lot of the grit and warmth of past disco styles, this track is crisp and clean, with the drum breaks sitting particularly well within the mix. This helps to compliment the vocals as they are not only pop oriented but political as well. The  message is both simple and timely, transmitting a powerful and traditional idea by way of an uplifting disco groove.

Better Listen Records is a label that needs no introduction, straight out of Washington DC, BLR has put out some breath-taking music from some of the biggest names in house and disco with Cody Currie, Ethyène and Ari Bald to name a few. With a motto to “press remarkable grooves” they certainly exceed this with each and every release, and have come a long way since establishing in 2016 no thanks to some great work from Martín Miguel.

BLRVA001 is next up on releases for Better Listen with the First Class a varied artist EP with quite possibly four of the most talented artists in the game; Folamour, Ethyène, Ari Bald and Dorsi Plantar. The first track comes from the magical and magnificent Folamour with ‘Oneness’ a beautiful piece of art in which we have the pleasure to premiere for you today. There aren’t enough superlatives to describe how good the Frenchman actually is and this track follows suit. Sweet guitars, addictive piano melodies and jazz-infused goodness with this one, things Folamour is well-known for. Ben Woods aka @bosqmusic was born on the coast of Massachusetts, a little Peninsula called Cape Cod, outside of Boston. In 2016 he moved his base to Medellin, Colombia, to immerse himself in the culture and sounds he so much adored.

Bosq’s has a new album coming out called “Love & Resistance” and is a collection of songs that reflect a producer’s continuing emergence by diving deeper into his influences. The strains of Afro and Latin flavours are interwoven and still heavily permeate but the underlying groove and rhythms have taken on a more modern, jazz-funk and disco-soul vibe with nods to Bobby Caldwell, Roy Ayers, the Mizell brothers and Nile Rodgers’Chic.

Our favourite cut off the LP, 'In Orbit' is a joyous piano funk stomper, full of soul and guaranteed to inject some sunshine & colour into your life when you hear it. A firm favourite in our sets right now!

Soundway Records present ’24 Hours in A Disco 1978 - 82’, 7 cuts of relentless disco grooves from the sublimely gifted Kiki Gyan. Hailed as Africa’s answer to Stevie Wonder, Ghanaian multi-instrumentalist Kiki Gyan was a musical wunderkind who by 1975 had risen from the lowly status of high school dropout to being ranked eighth in a poll of the greatest keyboardists in the world (occupying the rarefied air of the top ten with heavyweights like Steve Winwood, Billy Preston, and Stevie Wonder) as well as becoming an in-demand session player in the top recording studios of London - all before his twenty-first birthday. 

Out on his own, he produced a series of highly ambitious disco records aimed at positioning him as an international star, but weighed down by the excesses of the era, Gyan saw his meteoric rise matched by an equally swift fall back into obscurity. 

Loved dearly by his contemporaries and sorely missed since his death in 2005 the story of the life of Kofi Kwarko ‘Kiki’ Gyan is one often told with warning by his friends to the new generation of aspiring Ghanaian popstars.

Soundway Records now collects the best of Gyan’s work as a frontman and solo artist, featuring an array of electrifying disco grooves that still sound contemporary (and in some cases futuristic) decades after their initial release.

Released on CD and 2xLP both formats are accompanied with detailed liner notes written by Uchenna Ikonne. LP version comes with a free MP3 download of the release.
