I decided to put out a bunch of the stuff that has been sitting in the lab. These are all beats I made from somewhere between the late nineties and 2007ish.
Also put some of the unfinished tunes that were recorded here on this. Two tunes with my homegirl Tiombe Lockhart, one tune with the big homie C Rayz Walz, a freestyle iphone recording from PROPS of Renee Neufville over a beat i really like, one with Vinia Mojica that she co produced, which we did in one night as a scratch track for a CMJ showcase we had at PROPS.

Somethings I Never Said (beat tape & demos)

The initial thought that came to mind in the process of making “Blackcurrent Jazz 2” was to create a landscape of ideas that capture the truest essence of Jazz but that also embodied the purest and most authentic hip-hop feel. The original Blackcurrent Jazz album (released in 2001) was a great piece of work but for me was more a mesh of beats and breaks and sometimes with tracks that didn’t even lend to Jazz at all. This time around I wanted every single song to scream JAZZ!!! But still using a combination of Jazz breaks that give off varying vibes.

I wanted this album to be more polished, more distinguished and more discernable than 10 years ago. Smoother, more intricate and ultimately more of a thought through process to it. So I set about the production process which I knew would be huge, because I wanted to use additional beats for 20 second interludes to be used in between each main track, which then ultimately doubled my production load. I also knew that the main selections all had to musically jump out at me and I wasn’t going to start writing until I had found all the right beats that made me feel as if I have the right ingredients for a classic album.

And then it started. Hours of sampling, cutting, chopping, filtering, and pitch shifting, mixing and then mixing again. Then came the writing, recording and editing, which for me is a very lengthy and meticulous process. And finally after over 6 months work came “Blackcurrent Jazz 2: The Gold Reflection” subtitled to pay dues and respect to the golden era of hip-hop (the 90’s).

XL Middleton

I could write an entire enclyopedia on how highly influential the late, great  legendary vibraphonist, composer and producer Roy Ayers really was. 
This man is responsible for Neo-Soul, is massively regarded in Hip-Hop and sampled by pretty much every Producer but his influence also spread to Acid Jazz, House and even Liquid Drum and Bass.

In short, I'll let this tribute mix say it all.

Sometime around 1985, an 11-year-old Otis Jackson Jr. sampled his first song. Plucking an album from his dad’s collection, he tinkered with “Sucker” from Doing It To Death, a 1973 record by James Brown’s old funk outfit the J.B.’s. Inspired by pioneering hip-hop producers like the 45 King, Marley Marl, and Ultramagnetic MCs’ Ced Gee, the kid was trying to figure out how they managed to make beats without a band. Jackson doesn’t share any thoughts regarding the actual quality of his “Sucker”-based beat, but knowing that said tween grew up to be Madlib — one of the deftest and most versatile DJs/producers in hip-hop history.
