SMOOVE -IM A B BOY

The song ‘Lie Down In Darkness’ is named after a William Styron book, and the song, at least for me is a very emotional, sort of mournful, piece of symphonic, electronic music, my friend Joy Malcolm sings on it. 

Right before he died I got to hear William Styron speak at a Paris review dinner, he read from Lie Down In Darkness, I was watching him read and it was beautiful and emotional. I remember looking around to see if anyone else was having the same reaction I was having, and I looked around and it was all this jaded, cynical New Yorkers who were checking their blackberries or their iphones, and not paying attention. It made me so disappointed. I was thinking, here is William Styron, who is this remarkable writer and he is sort of bearing his soul and you could tell he didn’t have much longer to live and most of the people were not paying attention. But I feel really fortunate that I got to see him and meet him right before he died.

Just dug out this dj mix from 2002 (when I was a wee nipper;). 
I made it with my good friend Ed funk for his B-boy crew's training sessions (s/o Floor Crusaders!). There's probably been less than 5 copies in existence UNTIL NOW!  
Warning- this is proper original filthy funk breaks created specifically for b-boys.

Back in September 2007, Freestyle Records released ´Black Feeling´ an album project brought to life by Australian musical supremo Lance Ferguson (The Bamboos, Cookin´ On 3 Burners, Lanu) 

Each track was presented under a pseudonym to give the impression of an album you would find whilst digging in a Caribbean record shop or American thrift store. As a collection of reworked classics, the album set dance floors alight across the world, indeed, the single ´Hippy Skippy Moon Strut´ by The Mighty Show-Stoppers became a huge selling 12 inch, and also notched up well over 350,000 individual viewings on You Tube to date!

Now in 2011, Freestyle Records is pleased as punch to be releasing this teaser 45 single that features 2 cuts from the forthcoming follow up album ´Black Feeling: Volume Two´ (FSRCD/LP090) and what total corkers they are too!

The A side is Lance & Co´s fantastic reworking of the anthemic ´Burning Spear´ under the moniker of The Poly-Tones, an intense and driving piece of soulful funk, and what could possibly equal that for the flip side? The Mighty Show-Stoppers giving Johnnie Pate´s blaxploitation soundtrack classic ´Shaft In Africa´ such a convincing and wonderful re-working, you will think you are back in time, on the film set whilst Richard Roundtree (that's John Shaft to you sucker!) kicks some serious ass!

Brooklyn's Breakdown Brass dropped yet another killer 45! They've unleashed an original juggernaut entitled "Harrow", a follow-up to their smash debut 45 "Monmouth b/w Next Episode" (Kept Records) and sophomore 45 "The Horseman b/w Mary Jane" (Mixto Music). Driving, dirty horns are punctuated by intense trombone and baritone sax solos - prepare your stank face.

The B-side "Nautilus (Hijacked)" is a dance-floor burner that pays homage to Bob James, whose track Nautilus has been heavily sampled by Slick Rick, Eric B & Rakim, Run-DMC, A Tribe Called Quest, Onyx, Wu Tang Clan, Big L, Pete Rock and about 300 others. Throw in some Herbie Mann/Beatnuts and you got yourself a hit!

The members of Breakdown Brass stay busy - touring and recording with Ikebe Shakedown, Antibalas, Lee Fields, Sharon Jones, Charles Bradley, Monophonics and many others. Led by Nadav Nirenberg on trombone, their unique combination of heavy Afro-Funk with the sizzle of Balkan Brass has caught the eye of Gilles Peterson, NPR, BBC and more.
