Newcastle’s finest Smoove & Turrell are back with their third studio album Broken Toys. Their rise through the ranks of British soul has been unstoppable and this debut release from the album sends the signal that they fully intend for 2014 to be the year they take their unique brand of northern soul worldwide on a major scale. 

Having broken through onto the Radio 2 playlist in the UK with their last album Eccentric Audio the boys then went on to repeat the trick gaining national playlists in Holland, France and Germany and gaining the support of influential tastemaker stations like KCRW in LA who made the single Hard Work “Todays Top Tune”.

As most KCRW DJ’s are also Hollywood Music Supervisors this then led to Moby like levels of sync activity for the band with S&T’s Music being used on 2 US TV shows / a US feature Film / a video game / a US TV ad / a UK TV ad / a French TV synch and a whole host of UK TV syncs including Strictly, Corrie and Match of The Day.

A year of writing and recording fast forwards us to right now with the band gearing up for a month of UK touring in June and a summer of festival appearances to promote their new album. 

Scheduled for release in May, Broken Toys is another jump forward both in terms of production and appeal. Sparkling pop songs flirt with disco influenced floor fillers in between the blues, jazz, funk & soul the boys are so well known for.  
I Just Want More showcases the incredible songwriting and melodic appeal of this band.

Broken Toys

Low-Fi Classics is a love letter to that scratched, dusty old mix tape that you just couldn’t let go; a simple effective and touching home made soul album by two funky cats at the top of their game. A musical marriage made in heaven filled to the brim with strut, sweetness and singable hooks.

Be Warned: don’t expect a modern day super-squashed treble fest. Low-Fi Classics is an album that squarely turns it’s back on The Loudness War favouring a subtle, understated approach to sequenced music that calls back to the classic hip hop soul of the 90s without being a slave to the sound of other artists.

Producer, DJ and Multi-Instrumentalist Mr Bird brings influences as diverse as they are unique to the music for Low-Fi Classics, displaying a lightness of touch and a lingering background melancholy to his musical ear that establishes him as an artist with a true voice of his own.

Vocalist, Songwriter and all round Powerhouse Greg Blackman, fresh from his collaborative album with DJ Vadim, shows restraint and versatility on this project using many aspects of his unforgettable voice to create memorable, thickly layered soulful jams, flowing effortlessly over Bird’s diverse palette of rhythms.

Dropping 12 unique songs about people they've known, lessons they've learned and simple honest love of a good groove, Blackman & Bird have given their generation something really special in Low-Fi Classics: a timeless home made soul album that the audience will still be able to enjoy for many years to come. Biographies

Greg Blackman

Beloved UK Soulsmith, Phat Boy and Funkateer Greg Blackman is best known for his uniquely versatile voice, his passionate approach to his subject matter (wether that be life, love, social upheaval or just having fun) and his memorable hooks. He has been drafted in by the likes of DJ Vadim, Daz I Kue, Moquee, Herbgrinder, Featurecast, Renegades Of Jazz and Nightmares On Wax for his always in demand vocal swagger and has appeared on releases from BBE, Tokyo Dawn, Jalapeno and Bombstrikes.

His songs have been played on MTV and featured on the NME website, played on the Craig Charles Funk & Soul show on BBC 6 Music and reviewed in Blues & Soul Magazine. With more and more material from his extensive backlog being released and new material being cooked in his Soul Kitchen all the time, it's looking like 2014 will be The Year where Greg Blackman is placed among his contemporaries as one of the UK's finest Blue Eyed Soul Voices.

Mr Bird

Steve Bird AKA Mr Bird is originally from Newcastle upon Tyne in the UK, but in 2009 decided to follow his heart, spread his wings and jumped ship and moved to sunny Lisbon in Portugal, still looking for that perfect beat...

Spending his formative years between playing guitar in bands, dancing in forests, recording vampire films onto a Tascam 4 tack cassette recorder and studying music technology and production, Steve has always been heavily into music. He released 2 albums on the Brighton based labels Frequent Sounds and Hertz Recordings, and on the strength of the 1st album was invited to record a session for John Peel at the BBC Maida Vale Studios in 2002.

Since moving to Lisbon and having the chance to get into music production full time, Steve has been remixing and collaborating with singers, producers and musicians worldwide and writing original music for TV, documentaries and theatre and DJ'ing at bars and clubs in Lisbon. Steve has always been into a wide variety of music, and this has been distilled over the years in to the Mr Bird sound, always an ear for a catchy melody with strong hooks, a mixed blend of soul, funk and hip hop beats.

Steve has started a third label called Fat Bird Sounds in the summer of 2012 and recently had his third album ‘Bird bird bird’ released on the new Dublin based Vital Force label.
