More so than any other account, TINPE’s daily archival feed seems to have captivated lovers of underground dance music & club culture everywhere. Certainly, it has captivated me & keeps delivering the kind of musical joy that is hard to come by on these socials.

So I’m extra honored to post a guest mix by TINPE creator Ben Manzone. The mix came about through shared musical history: turns out we both used to be DEEP into obscure underground disco. 

15 years ago, Ben (as Benguin), Love On The Run and Fox 50 ran Foreal People, a deep cut disco party that took place in various New York locations. Those included Lucky Cat in BK (long gone) and Meatpacking District’s legendary APT (also long gone, and incidentally first venue I played at in NYC). 

Ben’s new guest mix revisits selections from Foreal People days. And trust me, old records are still fresh! Some of the jams have become better-known via streaming and reissues, while others still remain a little mysterious. No track-listing for now, but Shazam is your friend (except when it isn’t 😎)

Like I said b4, the tracks he plays here are Frankie signature tracks. That's what made his sets so unique.

Frankie Knuckles - Hot 97 All Night House Party, NYC 7-22-95' (Manny'z Tapez)

Seventh in a series of Mixtapes/Live Recordings as a tribute or ode to the clubs of Chicago of the past. The seventh mix is in tribute to The Clique, also known as the Comedy Clique, located on 2347 S. Michigan Ave., Chicago, IL. With a huge dance floor that was located upstairs, the music that was spun there was primarily Disco, House, and Hip Hop over its storied history. The building was initially the location of a car dealership that was then converted to a dance club in the 1980s. The Clique began as Le Mirage which featured none other than Lil Louis and his Diamond Corp (spinning off nights with Medusa’s. Le Mirage tuned into the sport’s themed Hero’s and eventually in the 2000s it became E2 (Epitome 2, as Epitome was the restaurant on the first floor). Noted patrons of the location ranged from Tupac to an Illinois Senator named, Barack Obama. Tragically on February 18, 2003, 21 people were killed as a stampede to exit the club ensued when security guards maced and pepper sprayed the overcrowded (1500 people in an 8,000 square foot dance area) venue. While investigations and reporting still leaves questions on a range of issues of code violations, political connections, discriminatory targeting in city policies, misconduct in city response to an emergency, profiteering, the history of the venue still left a mark on the history of dance culture in Chicago, in particular, Black dance culture that often times was marginalized. 

These factors also make this mix timely as it is released during a pandemic of a life threatening virus, high unemployment alongside increasing wealth, and a ramping up of State-level repression that has resulted in the loss of life of many.
