Inspired by a hike to the Pico Ruivo on the portuguese Island of Madeira with my son David.  When it is cloudy at the sea level and you pass the low level clouds on the way up to the summit then you feel like heaven's gate is opening and you look the from the mountain tops down to the sea of clouds. The spirit of the olympic gods seems so close (except that Greece is not just around the corner ;) ).

Hip Hop fans on Soundcloud are likely to have come across the prolific talent of Ian Greaves (aka @IPG1). Ian's smart & slick vocal tracks are widely used in collaboration by other artists, as I've done here with one of his more popular lyric tracks, "Modern Times".  

On this collaboration, all lyrics are written & sung by IPG1, and most of the music is performed by me, with the exception of the sampled vocalization in the middle bridge and ending, and a few minor sound effects here & there. The beginning starts off normal enough, but the middle section takes a bit of a left turn before I 'go off' on the synth in the second half. I kind of enjoyed working the sliders on the live synth performance.   ;)

HUGE thanks to IPG1 for his generosity and helping me put together what is effectively my first hop hop tune, originally composed as an instrumental track. The lyrics are a topic close to my heart too, so really enjoyed being able to add my 2 cents in a way.

So near the beginning of 2020, I just lost faith in music and quit. The world changed from a pandemic, and I just didn’t want to do it anymore. In 2022, I started scratching the itch a little bit with synthesizer music that would be soundtrack type stuff and did several collections of songs that nobody will probably ever hear. It was how I began to cope with everything. In 2024, at the lowest I’ve ever felt in my life, I’ve found my way back here…ten years since I started Behold the Sludge…playing…singing…trying to find myself again.

This classic Grateful Dead song has been a favorite of JJ's since his playing in a bar band days, decades ago. Therefore, he decided to come up with a perfect, lively skeleton on his piano for us to use for it, and shared it with us. I, being a Deadhead as well, jumped on the chance to play Phil's part on my four string fretless bass. Ken, who isn't necessarily a Deadhead, but can play most anything, jumped on with his driving drums around the same time as I added my bass line, as we went back and forth a few times before getting the rhythm section settled. 
  Stephen came along next with his cunning rhythm guitar, follow closely by his solo for the solo section. JJ added his solo for that section right after Stephen had laid his part down. Then we turned it over to James to add his rich, accent-drenched vocals. 
  When we had all the parts down, we turned it over to James and 
Stehen to produce and mix for us, which they did in expert fashion.
  This song was a lot of fun for the Deadheads in the band and non-Deadheads alike to record. This is also the second collaboration done by James and the Eclectic Collective, and we all enjoyed having him on this project.
  We hope you enjoy listening to this as much as we enjoyed making it.
