In light of the passing of the great luminary Gil Scott Heron, I have decided to give this one up to the world. 
This is my take on my favourite track from Gil's final album, I'm New Here( which is available to buy here: http://www.amazon.co.uk/New-Here-Gil-Scott-Heron/dp/B002ZBT84G ) 
I made this rework as a companion to the original - which for me evoked classic blues, New Orleans flavours, voodoo and mortality. 
A few shady characters have this track on their hard drives already, and I've been playing it out to great acclaim.

01 Funk In The Air – Fort Knox Five Remix:

This album-opener combines a trouser-flapping bassline with rock solid beats and BadboE’s trademark wikka-stikka guitars and hands-in-the-air vocal shouts.

Fort Knox Five remind everyone why they are one of the most admired and imitated acts on the flourishing NuFunk scene with this dancefloor-devastating remix. An instrumental version of this one is also included in the package.


02. My Bad – Jayl Funk Remix:

Scratches, guitar stabs and a rumbling bassline tag-team with rap snippets and chunky breaks on this track. The first breakdown sees Jayl Funk building pressure with an awesome horn line before dropping into an unrelenting groove.


03. Lose Your Funky Self – Fuzzbox Inc. Remix

Sounding like 22nd Century disco with 1970s grit, this is a banger that will work on any dancefloor. Deep bass, uplifting piano and funked-up guitars blend with soulful samples and enough builds and drops to keep the crowd shaking.


04. Nothing But The Funk – Fretless Remix

Tackling one of the biggest tunes from ‘Break The Funk’ Fretless lowers the tempo and adds a filthy synth bass to this funky concoction. The groove is spacious and driving, a perfect blend of retro funk samples and nu-skool synths and scratches.


05. Rescue Me – Big M Remix

Stepping up with tough up-tempo beats, incredible guitar lines and a rolling bassline, Big M’s take on ‘Rescue Me’ is dancefloor-ready right out of the box.

The drop on this one is massive and the second half sees a lowdown, grimey, floor-quaking bassline invade the mix. In short - this one is going to be huge.


06. My Bad – Basement Freaks Remix

Starting with a 4/4 kick and Latin percussion touches, Basement Freaks really stamp their mark on this track.

Vocal stabs and shining brass swirl around the beats and bass as this tune just grows and grows in a chugging infectious groove.


07. Let’s Get Ill – Nick Fonkyson Remix

With filtered disco touches, tough drum machine beats and incredibly funky synth bass, Nick Fonkyson’s take on ‘Let’s Get Ill’ takes no prisoners.

The brass section gets a workout and the beats become more and more intense throughout this track. Redefining the word phat!


 
08. My Bad – Tal M Klein Remix

A seriously infectious organ riff drives this remix, duelling with funky wah-wah guitars, a low-slung bass riff and deep kick drums.

As the vocal echoes sweep and swirl, the drums get more intense and the lush funky groove takes hold. Tal M Klein sounds like he’s taken the Meters hostage and forced them to play for him at gunpoint.


09. Ease The Funk – Funky Destination Rhodes Remix

As the name suggests, the electric piano is the start of this show as it blends with a walking bassline, funky vocal snippets and wicked touches of guitar.

A serious groove that take you back to the old school.


10. My Bad – Danny Massure Remix

Changing down a gear, Danny Massure gives us a slinky groover, lacing a bluesy guitar riff, funky brass stabs and Latin percussion into a heady cocktail perfect for a sunny day – Mojito on wax!


11. Funky Intro – Pulp Fusion Remix

The samples and scratches come thick and fast on this one – fat breaks, ‘Lesson’ style vocal snippets and guitar stabs.

When the vocals drop midway through, the groove is rock solid and the disparate elements suddenly come together into one beautiful whole.


12. Underground Heroes – Prosper Remix

This one gets down and dirty from the outset – full of unexpected switch-ups, jacking beats and filthy bass.

Prosper smashes the original into splinters and re-assembles it into a jagged party stomper with fidget house touches. Big. Real big.


13. Spread The Words – B-Dub Remix

Deep, spacious vocals flow over cinematic strings and sparse percussion as this strolls along. Definitely one for the after-party crowd, this remix takes BadboE’s original down a jazzy chillout route with amazing success. 

14. Let’s Get Ill Ft. Rabbi Darkside

This track is a massive hip-hop bomb. Darkside’s lyrics flow like a bubbling verbal river over tough beats and a filtered horn groove. 

Seriously, as if the beat wasn’t wicked enough, the vocal performance raises this to something else entirely. Must be heard to be believed.

Bob Marley - "Soul Shakedown Party (Fort Knox Five Remix)"

From the sweltering tropical depths of Cali, Colombia Will ‘Quantic’ Holland’s studio band Los Miticos Del Ritmo (The Mythics of Rhythm) return with an album of hip shaking, dancefloor quaking instrumental cumbias. Released on CD, LP and download on the 30th April. The LP is 100% analogue and comes with an original screen-printed front cover designed by the London based artist Lewis Heriz.

Assembled using vallenato and cumbia musicians living in Cali, Los Miticos del Ritmo are a 7 piece studio band put together by British musician, producer and now Colombian resident Will ‘Quantic’ Holland.

Covers of Queen’s ‘Another One Bites The Dust’, Michael Jackson’s ‘Don’t Stop’, The Abyssinians reggae classic 'Satta Massagana'  and Gildardo Montoya’s ‘Fabiola’ (as featured on Soundway’s ‘The Original Sound of Cumbia’ sit along side original cumbias on this feel good, house party cumbia LP.

Recorded in Will’s home studio in Cali, his approach was to produce an album with the aesthetics of 1960s tropical recordings made in Colombia and the Caribbean. Careful attention made to preserve the analogue quality of the recording at every stage.

‘The idea of the record was to record something that sounded like a lost cumbia classic,’ said Will in a recent interview with Soundway ‘Like something dug out of a Barranquilla basement after decades of humidity and dust. In a modern climate of mashups and sampling, it seemed refreshing to record something with musicians doing covers and approaching new ideas for cumbia, rather than rehashing old tricks.’

The record was recorded entirely on 4 track tape, using a process of overdubs and tape transfers to record multiple sessions at different times with different musicians. As Holland began to play the dub plates of the project in his DJ sets around the world, tracks like ‘Cumbia de Mochilla’ and ‘Another one Bites the Dust’ slowly became sure-fire dancefloor winners.

Los Mitcios Del Ritmo first saw the light of day on Quantic’s vinyl only EP ‘Hip Hop En Cumbia’, released last year through Tru Thoughts. The group includes Ancer Rada (percussion) grandson of the great Colombian accordionist Franscisco Pacho Rada, one of very first Colombian troubadours to tour unaccompanied with just his voice and accordion. The band is also compromised of Combo Barbaro regulars Fernando Silva (bass) and Freddy Colorado (percussion).

Since moving to Colombia in 2007 Will has slowly immersed himself in the musical history of the country. The much acclaimed ‘The Original Sound of Cumbia’, a 55 track compilation of Colombian cumbia and porro released on Soundway in 2011, was the result of five years of field research from Will. Simply finding and compiling old records is not however in Will’s DNA. The research is more an education for Quantic the musician who has been learning accordion for close to five years now, even taking lessons from Colombian and Panamanian accordion masters such as Anibal Velasquez and Papi Brandao.

Los Miticos Del Ritmo sees Will as an accordionist for an entire long player for the first time and must be the first traditional cumbia record recorded on tape in Colombia for many years.
